Frances Slocum will host Scout Day Crop walk supports area food banks | Members of the Wyoming Valley Crop Walk Committee met recently with recruiters from local schools and churches to finalize plans for the walk on October 10. The walk will begin by the pond at Kirby Park at 2 p.m. Registration begins at 1 p.m. Music by a DJ and the Coughlin High School band will welcome the walkers. Each walker will seek sponsors for this event. Twenty five percent of the funds earned from this Church World Service will support the food banks and pantries in Luzerne Cpunty. The remaining monies will go to other areas of the world in times of disaster. Most recently funds were sent to Turkey following the earthquake. HL receives environmental grant Senator Charles Lemmond (R- 20) announced today that Luzerne County received environmental grants totaling $28,895 from the state Department of Environmen- tal Protection (DEP). Lemmond said that the Harveys Lake Municipal Authority received $25,907 under the DEP's Sewage Facilities Planning Grant Program of Act 537 of 1966. The funding will be used to reimburse 50% of the cost to revise the official plan for sewage systems required by Act 537. “Although individual commu- nities have a responsibility to pre- pare and update their official sew- age plans, the state has an obliga- tion to aid them in this endeavor,” Lemmond said. A special community program for all area scouts (boys and girls) ages 8-12 is being offered by Frances Slocum State Park. This program will be held Sunday, Oct. 3 from 9-3 p.m. The topics include birds, trees, poisonous plants and animals, insects and Native Americans. Baker recently com- pleted the cadet basic training program at the U.S. Military Acad- emy, West Point, N.Y. The train- ing is designed to form new acad- emy cadets into disciplined sol- dier-officers possessing personal pride, confidence, obedience to command orders, and dedication to duty. During the six-week rigorous program, the cadet was trained in basic military skills, rifle marks- manship, field tactical maneuvers, physical fitness and endurance, military courtesy, drill and cer- emonies, and academic instruc- tion. After completing the basic train- ing program, the cadet is accepted into the U.S. Corps of Cadets at theacademy. Consequently, upon graduating from the academy, the cadet receives a bachelor’s degree and is commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army. Baker is the son of Bruce A. SCID schedules weekly siren tests Superintendent Ben Varner announced that the State Correctional Institution at Dallas will conduct a “Siren Test” on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at approximately 12 p.m. and every Wednesday from this day forward. The purpose is to test emergency equipment used to notify the community in the event of an escape or other emergency. No public action is required. Any phone calls related to the “Siren Test” should be withheld during the testing period.
