Section 2 July 21, 1999 Baseball, softball roundup Runs dry up for National vs. Plains Plains 7, Back Mountain National 5 Eventual district champion Plains slammed three home runs to eliminate Back Mountain Na- tional in seven innings. Losing pitcher Matt Shiskowski pitched well, striking out 10 and only walking two, but the Plains pitch- ing held National scoreless after the third inning, when National led 5-0. Nate Carr led off the game with a home run for the second ‘time in the tournament, and Bran- don Burkhardt and Matt Straub each doubled for National. Carr and Matt Kapitula each finished with three hits. LITTLE LEAGUE GIRLS Nanticoke 4, Back Mountain 3 Back Mountain fell behind 4-0 after five innings and could not recover. A three-run effort in the top of the sixth was just not enough. Sherri Horvath pitched the complete game for Back Moun- tain, striking out six. Rebecca Clay led Back Mountain with two hits including a double. Jodi Dickson also doubled for Back Mountain while Karrie Horsfield, Sarah Swepston, and Horvath added singles. JUNIOR LEAGUE GIRLS Back Mountain 7, Northwest 2 Raelynn Walter pitched a no- hitter despite giving up two runs as Back Mountain advanced in Junior League softball. She helped the ‘defense by collecting nine strikeouts. Back Mountain's of- fense was led by Meredith Lacey, Crystal Oley, Erin Swepston, and Shannon Thomas who each had at least two hits in the game. Nanticoke 12, Back Mountain 2 - Nanticoke defeated Back Moun- tain Thursday night via the 10- run rule after five innings. Back Mountain had three doubles but could not muster enough runs to stay with Nanticoke. Jen Konopki doubled and singled in two at- bats, while Erin Swepston and Stephanie Latosek doubled for Back Mountain. JUNIOR LEAGUE BOYS West Pittston 9, Back Mountain 6 Back Mountain had two doubles and ahome run but could not overcome the West Pittston offense in a game played last Wednesday. Charlie Stajewski hit a homerun while Jordan Koslosky and Adam Tkaczyk each doubled. Jeff Dickson struck out four over four innings and took the loss. Back Mountain 18, Plains 8 David’ Lohin picked up three hits to lead the offensive attack as Back Mountain moved into Tues- day night's district title game with a win over Plains on Sunday. Charlie Stajewski, Joel Lesinski, and Adam Tkaczyk each collected two hits, with Stajewski picking up two doubles. SENIOR LEAGUE BOYS Harveys Lake takes title Harveys Lake 13, Back Mountain 8 Harveys Lake defeated Back Mountain Monday night to clinch the district title and move on to sectional play beginning Satur- day. Jeff Taylor was the complete game winner, yielding just six hits and walking three. Offensively, Bob McKeon went 3-for-5 with a triple. A.J, Harris also tripled for Harveys Lake while Galen Waltman doubled and singled. Back Mountain had five doubles in the game that led to a six-run second ‘inning, but the Harveys Lake offense proved to be too much. doubles came from J.B. He finished with three hits, two runs scored, and three runs batted in. Kubhis Memorial Tournament for 11- year-olds, sponsored by Back Mountain Baseball, will begin to- night (July 21) with two games. At 5:45 p.m., Back Mountain Ameri- can faces Luzerne/Courtdale/ Pringle while Bob Horlacher meets Pittston at 7:45. Play continues Thursday with games at the same times, with Wyoming /West Wyo- ming meeting St. Therese and: Edwardsville /Larskville going up against Mountaintop. Play re- sumes Saturday with defending champion Back Mountain Na- ‘tional playing at 9 a.m. against Northwest. In the game Saturday, Back Mountain broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh when Rachel Kukosky tripled to center, scoring Colleen Mahon. April Naugle was the winning pitcher, going all seven and collecting four striokeouts..
