AT THE KIRBY Eskimo art and crafts at MacDonald Art Gallery Artwork and crafts created by skilled Eskimo artists will offer a glimpse into life in the cold Arctic, as the MacDonald Art Gallery at College Misericordia presents an exhibit titled “Arts and Crafts of the Inuit: The Vanishing Eskimo Past.” : The exhibit, presented in coop- eration with Blair-Murrah Mu- seum Exhibition Services, will run July 6-31 and September 1-26. The MacDonald Gallery will be open in August by appointment only. Josie Paperk, Abraham Niaquq, Leah Qumaluk, Isah Papiaaiu and other members of the Povungnituk Cooperative work in the medium of stone or print to portray the strength, spontaneity and vigor of Eskimo art. The 44 sculptures and prints included in the exhibit chronicle the history and legends of a people, portrayed in original art filled with native images and archetypes, saiud Brian Benedetti, art gallery director. “Through their experimental modes of expression, the Povungnituk artists offer arefresh- ing alternative to the self-concious and constrained works produced by many of their contemporaries. Artwork and crafts created by Eskimo artists will be displayed at the MacDonald Art Gallery throught July 31 and again in September. These artists exude both a pride and sensitivity toward the tradi- tions that have nurtured them,” he said.
