The award is presented annually in memory of Michael Gruen, a 6th grade teacher at Lehman-Jackson who died in an automobile accident in October, 1976. McOwen named to dean's list Hunter McOwen, daughter of Wayne and Frances McOwen of Dallas, was recently named to the Dean’s List at Sweet Briar Col- lege. The 1997 graduate of Bishop O'Reilly is an English/Creative Writing major at Sweet Briar where she is editor of the literary maga- zine, Red Clay and the winner of the 1998 Academy of American Poets Prize. The Stock Market Gameis a 10- week simulation during which students from three grade catego- ries (4-6, 7-8, 9-12) invest an imaginary $100,000 by buying stocks listed on the major securi- ties exchanges (New York, Ameri- can and NASDAQ). Students who compete in the game not only learn how financial markets oper- ate, but hone their mathematics and decision making skills as well. Separate 10-week competitions are held in the fall and spring. Team rankings are based on final portfolio values. Teams that finished first, sec- ond and third in their categories were recognized at a June awards ceremony. Noon to attend National Youth Leadership forum Jennifer Noon of Shavertown is scheduled to participate in the 1999 National Youth Leader- ship forum on medicine July 11-21 in Wash- ington, Jenn, who is going to be a senior at Dallas High School, will be among a select group of outstand- ing high school juniors and se- niors from across America and around the world who have met the qualifications required to par- ticipate in the Forum. Jenn was selected because of her outstand- ing academic achievements and her interest in medicine. Jenn will enjoy 11 days of dis- covery and mentorship at some of America’s most prominent and technologically-advanced medical institutions. The students will visit prestigious medical estab- lishments including the JENNIFER NOON Georgetown University School of Medicine, The National Library of Medicine, the George Washington University School of Medicine, and the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Intensive daylong concentrations at these and other institutions will allow students to examine state-of-the-art diagnos- tic tools and future medical spe- cialties in detail. Jenn will also have the opportunity to study and learn from some of America’s most distinguished medical leaders, in- cluding the U.S. Surgeon General and Patch Adams. The National Youth Leadership Forum is a non-profit educational organization and Jenn received help to defray some of the ex- penses.
