The Dallas Post )@ Section 2 ) @ ) @| June 16, 1999 ports r The 20th Annual Dallas Kiwanis Girls High School All- Star Softball Game will be played Monday June 21, at 6:30 p.m. on the Back Mountain Little League Field, Church St., Dal- las. The Kiwanis Chairman of this year’s game is Roy Stair. P.I.A.A. rules and officials will be used. To assure the partici- pation of each girl chosen, nine innings will be played and the 10-run rule will be suspended. Each player will wear her own team uniform. Additional equip- ment will be provided. Each team will be comprised of 18 senior girls from teams in the Wyoming Valley Softball League, who will be divided into East and West teams for the competition. The divisions will be: East Division - Bishop Hafey, Bishop Hoban, Coughlin, Crestwood, G.A.R., Hanover, Hazleton, Meyers, Nanticoke, Pittston and Seton Catholic. 20th Kiwanis all-star softball game June 21 West Division - Berwick, Bishop O'Reilly, Dallas, Lake- Lehman, Northwest, Tunkhannock, Valley West, Wyoming Area and Wyoming Seminary. There will be one head coach and two assistant coaches for each team. The head coach will be that coach with the best won- loss record for the current 1999 season. The head coaches will select their assistants. To celebrate the 20th Anni- versary Kiwanis will honor cur- rent coaches who played in the All-Star Softball game when they were seniors in high school. Phillies 5, Astros 3 Ryan Konopki lashed a game- tying hit with 2 outs in the 6th inning and then circled the bases . topreserve the Phillies’ undefeated season and 3-year winning streak. Matt Shiskowski struck out 16 @ iuters en route to the complete game win. Shiskowski, Matt Kapitula and Brandon Burkhardt each doubled for the Phillies. Scott Carter smacked a single, double and triple and collected 2 RBIs for the Astros. Red Sox 13, A's 7 Matt Shumbris and Matt Kelly tossed a combined 2-hitter and compiled 9 strikeouts for the Red Qk Kelly, Shumbris and Elijah wMiller each collected 2 hits, with Miller getting a double, while team- mate Matt Brokenshire had a triple among his 3 hits. Rangers 9, Red Sox 5 Chris Kester struck out 7 in hurling a complete game 6-hitter. For the Rangers, Ryan Marascio, J.J. Durr, Mark Evans and Ken : hamberlain each smacked 2 hits, with Evans and Chamberlain col- lecting doubles and Marascio get- ting a triple. The Sox were pow- ered by Chris Tooley’s 2-run triple and Matt Brokenshire’ 2-run double. In addition, Elijah Miller had 2 hits and Matt Kelly belted a double. 'Victory Run' Saturday at lake Th members of Our Lady of Victory Church, along with The Wyoming Valley Striders and Wysocki’s Sole Authority, will be conducting its first annual “Victory Run”. The 8.1 mile footrace around scenic Harveys Lake will be held on Saturday, June 19 beginning at 8:30 a.m. Registration the day of the race will be held from 7 to 8 a.m. The cost is $15. A 1/2 mile “Fun Run” for children age 14 and younger will be held immediately following the start of the Victory Run. Proceeds will benefit Our Lady of Victory Church and the Cultural Council of Luzerne County. Russ Wenrich named to all-state volleyball team Lake-Lehman senior Russ Wenrich has been named to the first team all-state volleyball team. Wenrich was a four-year member of the Lake-Lehman team and a three-year starter. He also started for the U.S.A. volleyball team and the Keystone State Games U-16 Pocono Region team in 1997. “Russ was selected as team captain this year, not only be- cause of his playing abilities, but also because of his positive lead- ership qualities,” said John Baranowski, head coach. Wenrich was the team leader in kills the past two years. He was a second team all-scholastic selec- tion in 1997, and first team in 1998 and 1999, was named to the first team all-district in 1998 and 1999, was all-state honorable mention in 1998, and was se- lected to play in the inaugural Pennsylvania vs. Ohio all-star match that take place next week. Lehman, Dallas finish 1-2 in boys volleyball tourney The annual District 2 Under- classmen Volleyball Tournament sponsored by M&T Bank was held in May at the Dallas Senior High School and Elementary gyms. Fifteen teams participated in a 3- pool, 11-point, round robbin tour- nament. The top two teams with the best records from each pool earned the right to advance to the playoffs. Dallas finished first with a 8-0 record, while Blue Ridge finished second with a 6-2 record in Pool “A”. In Pool “B”. Lake-Lehman went undefeated with a 8-Orecord, while Bishop Hoban, 6-3, also advanced in a sudden-death tie- breaker over Mountain View 5-4. Pool “C” saw Wyoming Valley West capturing first place with a 7-1 record and Nanticoke landing sec- ond place with a 6-2 record. The playoffs consisted of one ® Lake-Lehman Underclassmen tournament team, from left; first 15-point game. In the quarter- final round, Dallas defeated Bishop Hoban 15-4, Lake-Leh- . man beat Nanticoke 15-3 and Blue Ridge outlasted Wyoming Valley West 15-13. The semi-finals matched Dallas against Blue Ridge with Lake-Lehman receiving the bye. Dallas came from behind to advance to the finals witha 15-13 win over Blue Ridge. After a slow start between the undefeated Back Mountain rivals, Lake-Lehman cruised to a 15-3 first place victory over Dallas. Lake-Lehman ended the day with a perfect 10-0 record. Dallas earned second place at 10-1 with its only loss in the finals. : Blue Ridge finished third at 7- 3 with all three losses coming from Dallas. Rock 'n’' Fire just misses Keystones Back Mountain Rock ‘n’ Fire, a 16 and under girls softball team, missed a chance to play in the Keystone State Games by one run. Playing in a qualifying tourna- ment at Coal St. Park last week- end, the team beat the Anthractie Regional All-Stars 3-2 in its open- ing game. April Naugle went the distance, giving up five hits and striking out five. Rachel Kukosky went 2-for-2 at the plate, stole two based and score a run. Carrie Strausser was 2-for-3 with two rbi, and Jess Tarity was 2-for-4 with an rbi and stolen base. In the second game, the Blue Angels of Drifton handed Rock ‘n’ Fire a 9-2 defeat. Jesse Tarity went 2-for-3 and scored one run, and Naugle took the loss, giving up all nine runs in six innings. Rock ‘n’ Fire needed a win in its third game to advance, but was denied by the Wyoming Valley Flames in a game that was score- less until the bottom of the sixth inning. Back Mountain could muster only two hits, one each by Erin Madigan and Samantha Oschman. Naugle allowed only three hits, including a leadoff single in the sixth that led to the game's only run.
