Je me oy w OE The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, March 24, 1999 5 Turning into art Lake-Lehman High School is proud to acknowledge the following member of the Senior High Crafts class. These students were presented awards in the Rice Art Competition: 1st place, Mary Smee, junior; 2nd place, Katie Sprau, junior; 3rd place, Sandy Lowery, senior; Honorable mention, Sarah Race. Craft students began rice art, a mosaic art form, in the second marking quarter. Exibiting great patience, the students completed the tesserae project three weeks in to the third marking quarter. The subject matter was selected by students. Placement sketches were done on paper and transferred to masonite with carbon paper. All rice was dyed with four basic food colors, from which hundreds of colors were created. The rice was then dried, assorted into colors, and finally” placed grain by grain upon the pattern on the masonite. This year's judges were: Mrs. Christine Kopcho, biology; Mrs. Sandy Weyman, English; Mr. Joseph Dombrowski, English. Judges were to be aware of placement of rice, clarity and brilliance of color, complexity of design, shading and overall appeal of the work. Many of the art works also placed at the Rossetti Art Show, College Misericordia, Dallas. Top photo, rom left, Sarah Race, Mary Smee, Katie Sprau and Sandra Lowery showed off their rice creations. Valerie Williams, below left, worked on a piece of decaupage. Below right, Janice Marchakitus finished up a traditional Ukranian painted egg, or pysanky. POST PHOTOS/CHARLOTTE BARTIZEK The economic Viewpoin Howard Grossman Charisma is a Greek word meaning “gift of grace.” Charisma is sometimes pointed to as being a rare quality which is attributed to people such as former Presi- dent John F. Kennedy, Hollywood movie stars, well-known sports personalities, and others. Cha- risma recognizes special qualities in an individual, sometimes posi- tive and sometimes negative. Posi- tive charisma is exemplified by individuals whose ability is un- questioned, whose talents are obvious and whose admiration is broad scale and enduring. Negative charisma includes those attributes which create havoc and are unlikely to be rep- licated, characteristics which cause individuals to dislike that person, faults which may be de- fined as evil and despicable, and are traits which are not the defini- tion we seek for young people. Charisma encompasses a chal- lenge which is an important con- tribution to Northeastern Penn- sylvania and its future. Leaders in the region do not necessarily have to have charisma, but they need a style of grace which war- rants emulation. Negative cha- risma personifies stealth, bad in- tentions, and irresponsible over- tones. Leadership within the re- gion comes about as a result of organized thinking which enables positive accomplishments to be promoted, best practices: to be marketed, and communities to be recognized as leaders among lead- ers. Fallen leaders of the region's past should not be forgotten. Their style and charismatic life are an important testimony to the ca- pacity and capabilities which this region now offers. People like Thomas P. Shelburne, former owner of WNEPTV, Lou Feldmann, an attorney in Hazleton, John Hibbard former President of Com- monwealth Telephone, and many Charisma could help region others are the type of individuals who have distinguished them- selves either as community lead- “ers of recognition or charismatic leaders who have caused many others to join their crusade for new jobs, a new community, a new capacity for positive growth. Charismatic leaders of the past helped to create positive tension —————— by raising civic consciousness to enable the region to create the most startling regional economic comeback in the history of the United States. It enabled areas such as the Back Mountain, the Abingtons, Mountaintop and oth- ers to become major residential communities for the urban cen- ters of the region. Northeastern Pennsylvania is blessed with new opportunities to raise the interest level of our citi- zens to be proud of their heritage, proud of their own abilities, proud of the opportunities for the fu- ture. This will be accomplished, hopefully, through a new image improvement campaign which will carry the symbol of “Our CommWealth: the Pocono North- east Region.” The leaders of today and their drive, ambition, and charisma must strike moments of responsibility which can seta tone for shaping the region of tomor- row in a form, content, and economy which will have tremen- dous capacity to meet the needs of the generations to follow. The region is endowed with sig- nificant natural resources to en- able our regional Pocono-North- east CommonWealth tobe a strong partnership for the benefit of the many and to meet the needs of those who have fallen behind and need support system which North- eastern Pennsylvania tradition- ally has provided. This is part of our regional charisma. Howard Grossman is Executive Director of the Economic Develop- ment Council of Northeastern Penn- sylvania.
