The Dallas Post Dallas, PA 10 Wednesday, March 17, 1999 Gridiron Club honors scholar-athletes The Scholar-Athlete program of the Dallas Gridiron Club is proud to announce the academic achievers for the second quarter of the 1998- 1999 school year. These football players have met the criteria of making the honor roll or improving their GPA by .5 from the previous quarter. They were awarded at the Dallas Football banquet. They are: Matt Barnard, Mike Ferko, Jon Saba, Chris Tucker, Matt Douglas, Matt Jackson, John James, Randy Knappman, Matt Simpson, Kevin Yurko, Matt Eyet, Paul Hiller, Jon Lorah, Luke Miller, John Nackley. Herbert scores six firsts in season at U of S Tim Herbert, a Dallas High School grad finished his freshman swimming season at University of Scranton. Tim, this season had six first place finishes for the Royals. At the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships, he placed third in the 200 yard backstroke and fourth in the 100 yard backstroke. The Royals finished the season in fifth place in the MAC. : Tim is a biology and Pre-Med major at Scranton. Trout Unlimited banquet March 27 The Stanley Cooper Sr., Chapter of Trout Unlimited will hold their 8th Annual Conservation Banquet on Saturday, March 27, at Best Western East Mountain Inn with doors opening at 5 p.m. A Chicken Cordon Bleu dinner will be served. Local weatherman, Vince Sweeney, from WBRE-TV 28 will serve as master of ceremonies. The banquet will also feature bucket and outsideraffles, and, both silent and live auctions. Rods, reels, clothing, artwork, and other fishing items will be available. Tickets are $40 each and may be obtained from Scott Brady, 61 North Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre, Pa 18701. Raiders football registration Saturday Football registration for Kingston Township Raiders Junior Football and cheerleading will be held March 20, Sign ups will be held 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. at the Shavertown Fire Dept., Main St., in Shavertown. There will be a registration fee for both football players and cheer- leaders. This will include socks and a shirt for both. All participants need a birth certificate, a picture of him or her and medical insurance information. There are 3 squads: 6-9, 10-11 and 12-14 years old. Cut off is August 1. Questions call 696-0128. Droppers hits 1000th point for Sem Recently Kyle Droppers ‘99 be- came the fourth athlete in the history of Wyoming Seminary boys basketball to score 1,000 career points. Needing 22 points in the last game of his senior year, Drop- pers overcame the pressure and scored 23 points in a game against Seton Catholic. Droppers has played basket- ball at Sem for four years, playing on the varsity squad since his sophomore year and serving as captain both junior and senior years. Excelling in other sports as well 1s academics, Droppers was Sting wins U:10 Dome championship named first team All Scholastic in basketball and baseball during his junior year, most valuable player for Wyoming Seminary’s baseball team as a sophomore and was a finalist for the Killer Bee's student athletic award this year. According to coach Gary Vanderburg, “Kyle's success was due to his good work ethic. He is a talented athlete and a hard .. worker.” Kyle is the son of Kent and Alice Droppers of Dallas. He has been accepted early decision to Wash- ington and Lee University. “2 549g Back Mountain Sting recently captured the U-10 Girls Soccer Championship at the Wyoming Valley Sports Dome. The Sting finished the regular season tied for first place with an 8-1 record. They then won the championship by going undefeated in the playoffs, scoring 12 goals without any goals scored against them. It was the first year they participated in league play at the W.V.S.D. and had a great team effort. Cusick tournament held at the school last week. The Gators topped Dallas 51-50 in the title game, with Chase Susko scoring 16 points, Jim Chupka 15 and Dave Lohin 14. Paul McCue led Dallas with 17, followed by 12 each from Donny Murray and Jeff Dickson. The prior weekend, GOH finished second in the West Side Catholic League tournament, losing to unbeaten Regis after beating St. Al's 55-44 in the semifinal game. Jim Chupka led the Gators’ scoring with 19, followed by Dave Lohin with 16 and Chase Susko with 12.
