Students have been inducted into Delphi since the 1920's in honor of their academic achievements. The organization began with a group of history students gathering to share intelligent discourse. The society quickly grew to include students with other academic interests as well. Park naturalist visits Westmoreland Mrs. Mertz and Mrs. Socash’s kindergarten classes at Westmoreland Elementary school recently enjoyed a visit from Kathy Kelchner, the Frances Slocum Park’s Naturalist. Mrs. Kelchner presented an interactive program featuring how animals native to our local area prepare for winter. Students were allowed to handle several animal artifacts, such as a deerskin, antlers, bird feathers and snake skins. Pictured are students from Mrs. Mertz class. At the conference, the 13 members were tested in several areas, voted on next year’s regional officers and discussed future events. Of the 13 in attendance, eight received awards for outstanding excellence.Chris Tucker, president, Vanessa Velikis and James Haddle received second in Entrepreneurship. Joseph Stuppino received third in Public Speaking. Rhanda Shahin received third in Intro to Impromptu Speaking. Heather Harmon received fifth in Business Math. Jamie Gavin (publicist-historian) received third place in Accounting Il and is going on to states. Penn State to hold summer telecommunications program Penn State Wilkes-Barre is pleased to announce its summer ‘99 schedule in Telecommunica- tions Technology for students who are pursuing or already have a two year degree in Electrical Engi- neering Technology or Biomedi- cal Engineering Technology. All of the Telecom course require- ments for the associate degree in Telecommunications will be of- fered in five week June/July ses- sions. This will be an intensive pro- gram consisting of 10 credits. Students who are also interested in getting the Telecommunications Technology degree will need 15 credits plus a sequential degree application. In order to complete a sequential degree, if you are an EET or BET graduate, you will need five additional credits in any subject. During annual ceremonies to note the birthday of Dr. King at Wilkes University’s Dgrothy Dickson Darte Center, Miss Benham was cited for outstanding achievement, leadership and community service. The program coordinators noted her trip to Honduras in the summer of 1998, under the auspices of the Mission Office of the Scranton Diocese. During her stay, she worked with orphans and helped to construct a school for their use. The daughter of John and Sue Banks of Dallas, Darnetta plans to attend college in the fall and to get a degree in nursing. She is pictured above with school officials.
