Bro Knox Mine Disaster Exhibit at Anthracite Heritage Museum The Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum features "The Knox Mine Disaster" exhibit as a 40th anniversary remembrance of the Jan. 22, 1959 disaster when the Susquehanna River broke through with billions of gallons of water flooding interconnecting mines, killing 12 men, and shutting down anthracite mining in the Wyoming Valley. The exhibit tells the disaster story of abuse, greed , tragedy, heroism, escape, death, legality, and economic distress. It is a major historical event in our mining history. : : The Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum is located in McDade Park, off Keyser Ave., in Scranton (Exits 51 or 57B off I-81, and exit 38 from 1-476).
