6 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, January 20, 1999 . Joan Bigelow's "Treasure' website attracts notice An Internet website developed by Joan Bigelow, a 1968 graduate of Dallas High School, was high- lighted in the December, 1998 issue of the School Library Jour- nal. The feature, written by Walter Minkel, appears here. “Joan Bigelow, a sixth grade English teacher 'at Avon (CT) Middle School, has been teaching Robert Louis Stevenson's Trea- sure Island for six years. year, she turned her teaching unit into a Web site, which I've se- lected as the SLJ On-line Library Web Site of the Month. The site is an excellent example of how educators can use the Web to enhance students’ research and library skills. “Bigelow was drawn to the Web as an educational tool before she knew how to use it. She decided - to teacher herself, spending “100 hours of focused work” convert- ing the Treasure Island unit into a Web site. Now she’s receving for- mal HTML instruction as part of her MLS program at Syracuse University in New York. “The site includes a map of This JOAN BIGELOW Treasure Island, sections on vo- cabulary and labeling the parts of a pirate ship, a guide to creating a personal ‘Jolly Roger’ pirate flag, and the ‘Treasure Map Game: Clues to Riches or Death.’ Bigelow has also posted her course notes and teaching schedule for the unit. “Bigelow works closely with the school’s library staff on the site's bibliography and selection of links. Students make especially good use of the site during ‘research week,” when they visit the media center to explore ‘piratical topics.’ “Teachers from around the world have sent Bigelow rave re- views about the site and have requested more materials. Since - the site has been launched in March 1998, it has logged more than 16,000 hits.” Joan graduated from Bloomsburg State College in 1972. She also earned a Masters degree in education from Penn State. She is currently studying for an MLS from Syracuse Univer- sity. A teacher for 25 years, Joan is the daughter of Willliam and Dor- othy Lawson of Shavertown.
