Dr. Paul Torgersen, President of Virginia Tech University has announced the appointment of Andrew W. Bishop as the Under- graduate Student Representative to the Board of Visitors for the 1998-1999 academic year. The Board of Visitors is the highest policy-makaing body on the Virginia Tech campus and members are appointed by the Virginia governor to oversee the financial and administrative poli- cies of the university. Andrew will represent Tech's 20,000 under- graduate students on this board. Andrew is a 1994 graduate of. Dallas High School. He will be graduating from Virginia Tech this spring with a bachelor’s degree in Mining and Mineral Engineering. He is a member of Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity and serves as an officer. He also is a member of the Order of the Gavel and serves as its Presider, a mem- ber of the Commission on Stu- dent Affairs, a member of the Burkhart Mining Association and a member of the “Deans Team”. Andrew has been inducted into the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society, Golden Key National Honor Society and received the Alpha Rho Chapter Outstanding Leadership Award. Heis the recipient of the AP Boxley Scholarship, Virginia Tech Min- ing Department Scholarship, North Carolina Coal Institute Scholarship and WAAIME Schol- arship. Andrew's parents, Roger and Virginia reside in Dallas. ev (IE (0 ( Dallas Middle celebrates Veteran's Day Recently students at the Dallas Middle School were presented a Veterans Day program by Gunnery Sergeant Flemming and: Sergeant Nichols representing the United States Marine Corps. Sergeant Nichols talked about the origin of Veterans Day and Gunnery Sergeant Flemming discussed the strong meaning the day holds for all of American veterans. At the conclusion of the program the sergeants presented to the school a lithograph showing the raising of the American flag on the island of lwo Jima. Foreign exchange student comes to Dallas Recently James Keeble, a foreign exchange student from Quito, Ecuador, spoke to the Dallas Middle School German Club. James described his life in Ecuador. Club members were surprised to find out that many students in Ecuador study German and that there are many German language schools in the country. Many other cultural activities were discussed during the program. Ms. Ellen Boyer, German Club advisor, annually invites the foreign exchange students, who are attending the Dallas High Shoo! to come and speak to the club members. The 1998 Dallas yearbooks now available The 1998 Dallas Yearbooks have been delivered to the school and are available to those students who placed orders earlier this year. Alumni may pick up their yearbooks from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. daily in the high school main office. Receipts are helpful, but not necessary. A limited number of extra copies are also available on a first-come, first-serve basis for those who did not order earlier. These extra copies go quickly and alumni are encouraged to visit the school as soon as possible. Payment is due in full upon receipt of the book. The 1999 Yearbook Fundraising Campaign is underway and year- book staff members are contacting area businesses and organizations for advertisements. The money raised through this campaign remains within the school and directly benefits students by offsetting the yearbook selling price. The Dallas High School Yearbook Staff would like to thank those patrons and advertisers who have supported Dallas students in this campaign. Quentin Reese named tour guide Quentin Reese of Dallas, a senior business administration major at Franklin & Marshall College, has been named a tour guide for the Admission Office. Tour guides volunteer two hours each week to host visiting prospec- tive students and their families. They are knowledgeable in academic and extracurricular information as well as history and architecture of the college.
