"Hobo Pie" will appear at the Chicory House dance Nov. 14 Dance features Appalachian-style string band They'll be heating the hall with hot southern tunes at the Chicory House Contra Dance on Saturday Nov. 14. “Hobo Pie,” a four-per- son string band from the Phila- delphia area, plays a wide-rang- ing repertoire of traditional Appa- lachian tunes. This lively music will accompany a program of ap- propriately southern-flavored dances: contras, squares and tra- ditional “running sets.” The Chicory House and the Folklore Society will co-sponsor the New England Contra dance starting at 8 p.m. at St. Therese’s Church on Pioneer Ave., Shaver- town. “Hobo Pie” consists of Carl Baron, on fiddle, banjo, and banjo- guitar, Barbara Johnson playing guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo- guitar, and uke, Ray Frick on banjo and banjo-uke, and Bob Woodcock, guitar, autoharp, man- dolin and banjo. The band’s name comes from a campfire cooking utensil which consists of a two-piece cast iron. pan with long handles held over an open fire to cook. A band member used them while camp- ing at the Appalachian String Band Festival in Clifftop, West Virginia and was introduced to the name.
