Ed Schechter to receive Wilkes honorary degree Edward Schechter of Shaver- town, will be awarded an honor- ary Doctor of Humane Letters from Wilkes University during Sum- mer Commencement, Thurs., Sept. 3. Ceremonies will begin at 11:45 a.m. at the Dorothy Dixon Darte Center for the Performing Arts, South and River Streets, Wilkes-Barre. “This award recognizes Mr. Schechter’s lifetime of distin- guished accomplishment and ser- vice to the people of the Wyoming Valley,” said Wilkes University president Dr. Christopher N. Breiseth. “It is our pleasure to honor Ed and thank him for his tireless efforts to improve our com- munity.” A graduate of Dartmouth Col- lege, class of 1940, Schechter received a baccalaureate degree in economics and political sci- ence. : ~ He relocated to the Wyoming Valley in 1953 to serve as presi- dent of Stressteel Corporation. It was through this affiliation that Schechter began a 40-year career of community service. In the 1950's Schechter be- came an active member of the Greater Wilkes- Barre Chamber of Commerce by serving on the Board of Directors, as a member of the Executive Committee, and as chairman of the Transportation Committee. A member of the Luzerne- Lackawanna Transportation Study in the 60's, Schechter was instrumental in helping to plan the Cross Valley Expressway. During this time, he was asked to sit on the board of directors for the United Way. Schechter came to the aid of area victims as a member of the EDWARD SCHECHTER 1972 Flood Recovery Task Force (FRTF) and as chairman of its Transportation Committee. Throughout the 1970s and 1980's, Schechter spearheaded and was a founding member of the Luzerne County Transporta- tion Authority, Leadership Wilkes- Barre and the Committee for Eco- nomic Growth. While Schechter spent the past three decades improving the qual- ity of life in his adopted commu- nity, his most recent efforts have . helped the environment.
