Newberry plans member-guest tournament Ruth Betty Baltimore and Beth Rosenthal, co-chairmen of the Newberry Country Club member- guest golf tournament, met re- cently with golf pro Ed Keil to finalize plans for the June 22 event. The tournament consists of two golf flights, beginning at 10 a.m., followed by luncheon at Newberry Estate's Appletree Terrace. Each member of the ladies league in- vites a guest for golf and lunch. Golf foursomes are composed of two members and two guests. Prizes will be awarded for winners of each flight. Extra-base hits were provided by Luke Marchakitus and Mike En- glish, who doubled, and Cory Shultz, who tripled. Ryan Bloom was the winning pitcher. For the Pirates, Gracjan Kraszewski, Bra- dley Fagula and James Holdredge all had doubles. Pirates 14, Orioles 8 Greg Andrusisian pitched and batted the Pirates to victory. Andrusisian had 2 hits and scored 3 runs on offense while striking out 5 Orioles to pick up the win. Kyle Hession and Sean McAndrew each had 2 hits for the Pirates while Grant Roberts walked 4 times and scored 3 runs. Tim Crossin and Ryan Murphy had 2 hits apiece for the Orioles. Red Sox 8, Yankees 4 Matt Kelly, Elijah Miller, Chris Higdon and Tommy VanHorn all had 2 hits for the Red Sox. Doubles by Miller and VanHorn were the only extra-base blows by the win- ners. Miller and Higdon com- bined to strike out 12 Yankees. Jacob Kovalchik doubled for the Yankees. JR. LEAGUE BASEBALL BMT Pirates 11, Harveys Lake Barons 10 Ryan Gryskevicz struck out 13 Barons batters to claim the win in a hardfought game that saw strong hitting on both sides. For the Pi- rates, J.J. Sidorek went 3-for-5 with a run and RBI; Gryskevicz was 3-for-5 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBIs, scoring the winning run; Brian Cornia went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs; Steven Salavantis was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Also, Gerald Mikelsky hit his first single of the season and scored, and Brett Considine got his second hit, two walks and scored. The Barons were led by Webber (2-for-3, 3 runs), Casper (2-for-3, 3runs), Ide (3-for-4), and Johnson with a single, two walks and two runs scored. Turner took the loss after 6 1/3 innings. SOFTBALL-MAJORS Red Sox 4, Yankees 0 Shannon Thomas struck out 7 in pitching the shutout. Cassandra Backes had 2 hits and Thomas smacked a triple to power the Sox offense. Alyssa Daniels and Jennifer Konopki also con- tributed for the winners. Jodi Dickson was the top performer for the Yankees. Field hockey camp at Lake-Lehman The Lake-Lehman Field Hockey Parents Association is sponsor- ing their annual field hockey camp July 26-July 30. The camp will be held at Lake-Lehman High School and will feature Division I coaches and players. Interested players in grades 7 through 12 may pick up a registration form at the Lake- Lehman High School office from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Mon.-Fri. and return it by July 1. Kiwanis all-star oirls' softball game June 22 The 19th annual Dallas Kiwanis Girls High School All-Star Soft- ball game will be played Monday, June 22 starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Back Mountain Little League field. The nine inning game will use PIAA rules and officials, but the 10-run rule will be suspended. Each player will wear her team uniform. The teams, designated East and West, will each have a roster of 18 senior girls. Dallas and Lake-Leh- man girls will play on the West team. Bob Gray, Lake-Lehman head coach, will coach the West team, assisted by Mike Twardowski of Bishop O'Reilly and Joe Ball of Tunkhannock. Catherine J. Wilson, 1st vice president of the Kiwanis Club of Dallas, serves as chairman of this year's game. The West roster includes Darby Wolfe, Kim Halowich and Marisa Michaels from Lake-Lehman, Becky Beisel from Dallas, and Jennifer Stolarick from Wyoming Seminary. BMT softball camp features pro coach Back Mountain Baseball and Softball will host a softball camp conducted by Planet Fastpitch and its owner, Denise Davis, June 22 through June 25, at the Back Mountain Little League field. Davis captained the 1994 Rutgers University softball team and was a 1993 first team All American. Currently, she is an assistant coach at the University of Rhode Island. She will be assisted at the camp by other URI coaches and a group of URI players, featuring former Bishop Hoban standout Kellie Cookus, who has been hon- ored as the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year. Girls ages 7 through 18 are eligible to attend. Emphasis will be placed upon the fundamentals of pitching, catching, infield and outfield training. The cost of the camp is $95, with family and team discounts available. Rich Macri will attend King's Rich Macri, a key member of the Dallas High School football team will continue his academic and athletic careers at King's College. The 5'8", 212-pound Macri was a two-year starter at defensive end for coach Ted Jackson. As a senior, he was the third leading tackler | for the Mountaineers and was the recipient of the 1997 Iron Man Award. Macri was part of a successful Dallas program which won the 1996 WVC Division II championship and qualified for the Eastern Conference playoffs. qualified for the PIAA playoffs.
