Library is pleased to have on dis- play in the reading room two of the winning History Day Compe- tition projects. The S.S. St. Louis: Voyage of the Damned won first place in the regional senior group division, completed by 10th grad- ers, Norah Krakosky, Brittany Bartolini and Amanda Jenkins. The different areas of the display include S.S. St. Louis-HAPAC Line; where 907 Jewish passen- gers boarded May 13, 1939 with a picture of Captain Gustav Schroeder with a quote from Cap- tain Schroeder “You will all never forget for a moment that these passengers are to be treated no differently from all others we have carried.” It includes profit scan- dal and personal account of two survivors Liane Reif and Gorda Blachman Wilchfort. Another subject, Operation Sunshine - a Nazi spy mission/Germany 1939- quote from Heimrich Himmler “These people must die”. From the.New York Times of June 9, 1939, “The cruise of the St. Louis cries to high heaven of man’s in- humanity to man”. “The Lost Colony of the Confed- eracy” took second place in the same division. It tells of the mi- gration of a people, “the preserva- tion of a life style”, and features the United States of America/The Civil War. General Lee did not agree with the migration of the confederates, therefore his family left the country and went to Bra- zil. . The scarcity of knowledge- able- individuals led correspon- dents: all over-the country. Be cause of the migration, Brazil too has felt the effect of the United StatesWar. Confederate migra- tion to Brazil 1865-1871. The southern ways have melded into Brazilian in that other great melt- ing pot, and none of us can ever go back: We are linked by the unbreable bonds of history. The purpose of display- ing the projects was to allow the community to see the work the students were doing outside of class: The members of the 52nd auc- tion committee are welcoming do- nations in all areas and there is a sign-up sheet in the library for people willing to give some time for volunteer projects. The auc- tion dates are July 9-12. Dallas Baptist to host special production A special production entitled “Because We Believe” will be pre- sented by The Northeast Pennsyl- vania Baptist Associational Youth Choir at Dallas Baptist Church on Sun., June 28, 10:30 a.m. “Because We Believe” is de- @ J signed as a worship experience for all ages to be led by youth. Written by renowned Christian artist Steven W. Taylor, “Because We Believe” is a powerful state- ment of faith in God as the source of life changing truth. It is an inspiring thing to hear and see these teenagers expressing their faith in such a dramatic way. The 26 voice choir includes youth from churches in Williamsport, Berwick, Dallas, Meshoppen and Hazleton. The director, Kenton Hunt is the Associate Pastor at First Southern Baptist Church in Williamsport. (A freewill offering will be received.)
