@), $ The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, May 13, 1998 11 Dallas Middle School to hold orientation for fifth grade The Dallas Middle School will hold an orientation program for the parents of fifth-grade students who plan to attend the Dallas Middle School next year. The program will be held on Thurs- day, May 21 from 7 to 9 p.m. The orientation process begins when the middle-school guidance staff visits the fifth graders at the elementary schools to explain the middle school program. On Thurs- day, May 21, student council rep- resentatives will give the students a guided tour of the building. A question and answer period will be held in the auditorium. On Thursday, May 21, all fifth- grade parents are invited to the middle school for the orientation program that will include a pre- sentation by the guidance staff and a guided tour of the middle school building. Parents also have the opportrunity to meet the sixth- grade teachers. Westmoreland PTO to meet May 14 The Westmoreland P.T.O. will meet at 7 p.m. on Thurs., May 14 in the school library. Interested parents are welcome to attend and to participate. The officers of the Westmoreland P.T.O. will be installed on Wed., May 20 at 7 p.m. Parents and friends are invited to attend. The evening will also feature a display of student projects from all grades, Kindergarten through Grade 5. Kathleen McCarthy, principal, urges all parents and interested members of the community to come to support the P.T.O. and to see the excellent work of Westmoreland students. Sem 4th graders quality for Carnegie-Mellon talent search Thirteen fourth-grade students at Wyoming Seminary Lower School have qualified for the Carnegie Mellon University Insti- tute for Talented Elementary Stu- dents (C-MITES) Talent Search. Carnegie Mellon's Talent Search identifies young students who are talented in mathematics, science, or verbal reasoning. C-MITES provides a variety of summer and weekend programs for identified students. Batory presents at int'l conference Dr. Anne Heineman Batory of Dallas recently presented a paper at the Association of Marketing Theory and Practice Annual Con- ference in Charleston, SC. The international conference hosted over 300 people. Batory’s paper which was for the marketing research track, was titled “A Field Assessment of Ques- tionnaire Length, Content amd Response Rates Among Small Businesses.” Batory is currrently dean of the School of Business, Society and Public Policy at Wilkes University. The paper was published in a book of proceedings from the con- ference, titled “Expanding Mar- keting Horizons Into the 21st Cen- tury” Joe Chapman editor, vol- ume. 7,.1998. Students honored at Bucknell University Recently students from Penn- sylvania were honored at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, for their exceptional academic talents. At special awards ceremonies, the Johns Hopkins University’s Insti- tute for the Academic Advance- ment of Youth recognized people in grades seven and eight for ex- traordinary achievement in Hopkins’ annual Talent Search, the largest pre-college academic talent search in the world. Two students from Dallas, Steven Losh and Adam Morgan were honored at this ceremony for their outstanding SAT scores. They also each received a scholar- ship from College Misericordia to take a 3-credit college course of their choice at the college. Both are seventh grade students at the Dallas Middle School. At Hopkins’ Awards Ceremo- nies, seventh and eighth graders who scored above the mean for college-bound seniors on the Col- lege Board's SAT 1: Reasoning Test received certificates and spe- cial awards.
