09 ¢@ 0 ¢ @ “9 vv @ - @ y @ The Dallas Post Section 2 Wednesday , March 25, 1998 Sports Over 1,000 people came through the doors of Penn State Lehman to watch 32 teams par- ticipate in a double elimination girls basketball tournament with teams from Dallas, Wilkes- Barre, Wyoming Valley West, Nanticoke, Tunkhannock, Northeast Bradford, Gate of Heaven, Hanover, Lehman and Saint Al's. Four divisions-5th grade, 6th grade, 7th grade and 8th grade having 8 teams in each division. First round play started March 19 and March 20 and continuing March 21 with final rounds Sun., March 22. Trophies were awarded for Ist, 2nd and 3rd place teams and individuals. There were also 5 all-stars picked from each division and one most valuable player of each division. Newport 28 - Tunkhannock 21 In the 5th grade division New- claim the title. Newport's well balanced scoring attack was led by Courtney Pinka and Jessica Koslowski with 7 points apiece, followed by Caitlin Klish and Danielle Warren with 6 points apiece and Nicole Washik with 2 points. Tunkhannock’s Kalen Kropa led all scorers with 17 points. Also scoring for Tunkhananock were Katie Starzee and Chawndele Adams, 2 points each. Wyoming Valley West maroon team took third place honors. Dallas Youth Basketball 39 - Tunkhannock 16 Dallas Youth Basketball ruled the 6th grade division with a convincing 39-16 victory over Tunkhannock. Leading scorers in the championship game were Halli Williams’, 14 points, Meredith Lacey, 13 points, Sh- annon Thomas, 8 points, Jackie Hardwick, 4 points with lots of big rebounds and Ashleigh King, 2 points. Tunkhannock was led by Angie Edwards, 5 points, Jaime Morrison, 4 points, Linsey Roarke, 3 points and Ashley Ritz and Stacey Szychowski, 2 points apiece. Newport finished third to bring home trophies. Gate of Heaven 35 - Wyoming Valley West 1 32 Gate of Heaven won the 7th grade division with a 35-32 win over Wyoming Valley West 1 team. Gate of Heaven was led by Caitlin Ward, 10 points, Morgan port beat Tunkhannock 21 to. On the run, Lehman's Janna Elston, top photo, drove past a Newport defender. Finishing third place in the 7th grade divison was Dallas Youth Basketball. Lehman 16 - Newport 14 Kari Maskalis nailed a jumper with seconds remaining to claim the crown for Lehman over New- port in the 8th grade division by the score of 16-14. Maskalis and Danielle Kern hit for 6 points apiece, while Gina Coombs added 4 points to lead Lehman. - Newports’ Lauren Kurkowski led all scorers with 7 points, fol- lowed by Jan Walters, 3 points and Nancy Wiaterowski and Erica Roback, 2 points each. Wyoming Valley West finished with third place honors. All Stars 5th grade All-Stars were Caitlin Klish, Danielle Warren and Jessica Kosloski from New- port, Mellisa Stefaniak, Wyo- ming Valley West maroon and Sara Confer Wyoming Valley West gold. Lake-Lehman Jr. High girls win Division II championship The Lake-Lehman Girls Jr. High basketball team recently completed its finest campaign ever by winning the Division II title with a 35-30 victory over the Hanover Area Lady Hawks. Kari Maskalis led the way with 10 points and Gina Coombs added 9. The Lady Knights also received key contributions from Danielle Kern, Janna Elston, Angela Harris, and Ashley Yanchik. Two days later the Lady Knights met the Trojanettes from Nanticoke Area and won the Wyoming Valley Conference overall title by a score of 28-27. It once again was a complete team effort with the Lady Knights placing five players in the scoring column. Danielle Kern led Lehman with 10 and Kari Maskalis scored 6. Angela Harris, Gina Coombs, and Janna Elston scored 4 each. The Lady Knights finished the season with a record of 17-3. The girls playing in a freshman league accomplished this feat with a team of all 7th and 8th grade students. The Lady Knights are coached by Rob Wilson and assisted by Brian Coombs and Barry Horvath. PA Fish and Boat Commission plans boating course in Dallas The PA Fish and Boat Commission Basic Boating course will be held at the Pennsylvania Game Commission's Northeast Regional Office, Rte. 415, Dallas, Sun., April 26, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Registration is required for the course. Seating is limited. Interested parties should call 717-477-3960 or e-mail safeboating@juno.com with name, phone number and number of attendees for a reservation. Lunch will not be provided. A lunch break will be given around noon time and those attending should bring a box lunch and refreshments. The course will acquaint experienced boaters with many aspects of boating they are not aware of as well as changes in current regulations. The course is open to everyone 12 years of age and older. This course will allow individuals 12 to 15 years of age to satisfy the mandatory minimum age requirements for the operation of a motroboat and the new age requirements for personal watercraft in Pennsylvania. KT Shootout draws 90 The Kingston Township Recre- ation had a record turnout with more than 70 boys and girls and more than 20 adults participating in its annual basketball shooting competition. Free Throw winners per age group were: (7 & 8) Doug Harding; (9 & 10) Bobby Lenahan; (11 & 12) Tim Kerestes; (13 & 14) Brad Lothridge; and (15 & 16) Dan Fauerbach. Three Point winners per age group were: (7 &8) Doug Harding; (9 & 10) David Harding; (11 &12) Adam Schoonover; (13 &14) Bobby Zaruta; and (15 &16) Dan Fauerbach. New for this year was a parent/ child team shooting competition that turned out for more than 20 teams of dads, moms and their children. Slocum honored for 300th victory College Misericordia softball coach Charlotte Slocum was presented with a plague recently from the National Fastpitch Coach’s Association in recognition of her 300th career victory. Now in her. 18th season at Misericordia, Slocum reached the milestone last year and is 12th among active Division Ill coaches with a career winning percentage of .683. With a career record of 313-145, Slocum is ninth among active Division lll coaches in career victories.
