Gate of Heaven's 5th grade Green and White teams met Sunday afternoon in the Dallas Youth Basketball grade 5-6 tournament. Both teams came into the game unbeaten, but the Green team was the only undefeated My Jeanette Manorek surprises Cougars, herself By CHRIS BELL Sports Correspondent DALLAS - For someone who almost didn’t attend College Misericordia, Shaver- town resident Jeanette Manorek has certainly found a home on the Dallas cam- pus. Whether it’s on the basket- ball court or the soccer field, the two-sport standout has made an impact on both teams and was recently named to the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference all-star team for the second time this year. She was named honor- able mention All-PAC in basketball and was a first- team All-PAC selection in soccer last fall. “I almost didn’t come to Misericordia,” explained Manorek, who helped the basketball team to a 13-12 record and a trip to the PAC playoffs. “I had paid a deposit and was supposed to go to Wheeling Jesuit College in West Virginia.” But, near the end of her senior year at Bishop O'Reilly High School, Manorek had second thoughts about being six hours from home. °I decided I didn’t want to be so [far away,” she explained. “I'd only be able to come on breaks and nobody would come to my games.” After seeing time as a reserve on the basketball team last season, she stepped into a starting role this year and finished as the team’s second-leading scorer and tied for the team lead in rebounding. “Coach (Paul) Van Hooydonk had recruited me to play soccer, but I hadn't had much contact with coach (Julie) Oja about basketball,” explained Manorek. “I knew I'd be welcome on the soccer team, but I didn’t know what to expect in basketball season.” After two successful season, those questions have been answered. “Jeanette has been like a gift to our pro- gram,” said Oja. “It's not often that a player of her caliber falls in your lap. She is a very hard worker and has really improved on the defensive end.” In Misericordia’s PAC semi- final loss at Gwynedd-Mercy, Friday, Manorek drew her usual assignment against the opponent's best inside player. This time, it was the Griffins’ Michel Costa, the 16th ranked scorer in NCAA Division III with 20.7 points per game. Although the Cougars lost, 68-62, Manorek held Costa to 13 points while scoring 19 points of her own and grab- bing 11 rebounds. “For us to be successful, Jeanette has to ° give us the total package,” explained Oja. “She needs to score, rebound and play defense.” After struggling early in the season, Manorek put things together in the second half and ended the year with 10.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. “I was very inconsis- tent at the beginning of the year,” said Manorek. “We started playing better as a team in the second semester and that helped me as an individual.” Despite a 1-5 record to start the year, the Cougars reached the PAC semi'’s for the fourth straight year. “I thought we'd get back there again,” said Manorek. “We surprised some people, but not ourselves. We're disap- pointed about losing to Gwynedd-Mercy because we had a chance to win the PAC.” As for her decision to attend Misericordia, Manorek has no regrets. “It was a good decision,” she said. “I'm really glad I changed my mind.” ai Jeanette Manorek went up for 2 in Misericordia's last playoff game.
