4 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, September 3, 1997 7° yA COLLEGE MISERI- CORDIA - Alvaro Garcia's installation “Requiem: Good Goth(ic) Almighty” will open at College Misericordia’s MacDonald Art Gallery on September 2 and run through October 5. Garcia created the work, made of about 200 discarded tires, over several weeks at the Gallery. The exhibition is free and open to the public: a special reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, September 6 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Gallery hours are Tues- day through Thursday, 12-5 and 6-8 p.m; Friday, 12-5; and Saturday and Sunday, 1-5 p.m. Closed Monday. Garcia works in “found” materials, such as the tires he used to create the piece for Misericordia’s gallery. Ac- cording to the artist, an installation is an act of faith that combines the response of the artist to his materials — their physical properties and previous histories — with the relationship to the site it occupies and the process of creating it. Local history played into his design, with the tires relating to the color of the valley’s coal and, coincidentally, the recent removal of hundreds of tires from the river in Edwardsville. The atmo- sphere of the Catholic college contributed an emotional element to the process. Although trained as a painter at Philadelphia College of Art and later Yale, Garcia began his education in the field of architecture. His conversion to sculpture came unexpect- wont ire’ of this art edly, when he became intrigued by the refuse left at industrial sites near where he lived in Brooklyn. Sheet metal, wooden palettes, shelving and tires were abandoned in the yards, and he began to think about how he could use these formerly functional things as raw materials. He believed them former uses and the stories told by the wear and marks on them told something about our culture, and when he began to work with them he allowed his intuition to carry the design. Garcia has exhibited his work all over the United States and has completed 10 installments using various combinations of materials. For more information call 674- 6250.
