In the playoff series pitchers Bobby Lenahan and Matt Kelly combined for a 10-8 victory over the Tigers. Steve Fritz pitched a 9-1 victory over the Red Sox in the American League Championship. In the final game, Jacob Kowalchik pitched an 11-0 no-hitter against the National League Champion Dodgers. O Northwest defeated Back Mountain National by a score of 10-0, July 17, in a game called due to the 10 run rule after five innings of play. Northwest ad- vanced into the second round win- ners bracket with its first round victory. Back Mountain National mustered just two singles by Kyle Filipczyk and Corey Shultz. Mike English took the loss even though he pitched a complete game. Vince Scalzo was the star for Northwest. Amer. 13 - Pittston 8 In the second round winners. bracket game, Back Mountain Yacht Club's racing at mid-point The Harveys Lake Yacht Club's racing season came to its mid- point on Sun., July 20. The par- ticipants were met by blue skies and light to moderate winds ap- proaching seven to 10 knots. The race course was a Modified Gold Cup Configuration five miles in length. The frst sailboat, captained by Joan Williams, crossed the finish line in one hour and 50 minutes. Commodore David Delaney posted the following handicap re- sults: First place went to Joan Will- iams and Jane Harter who crossed the line with a tremendous lead over the fleet despite overcoming a 360 degree penalty. The experi- ence and the ability to read wind shifts contributed to the success of the Williams /Harter team. Sec- ond place went to Drs. Lane Giddings and Fred Shaefer; third place, Dr. Henry Steuben, sailing a Phantom; fourth, Rep. Kevin and Beth Blaum; fifth, Dr. John Alaimo and Ellen; sixth Bob Hall and Barbara Aston. The Hall/ Aston team was called back be- cause of a premature start, this necessitated arestart penalty. The Comet Class winner was the Wil- liams/Harter team, second place: the GiddingsShaefer team and third place went to the Alaimo team. The race committee with chairman, Frank Wadas, was as- sisted by Sam Alaimo, John and Chris Ryder. The Jack Barnes Memorial Race will be held on Sun., July 27. All sailboats from Sunfish to cruis- ing types ae welcome to enter. There is no fee and a trophy will be awarded. No racing experience is required, this is a fun race and all are invited.
