Sr. boys in must-win game after first playoff loss By JENNIFER KLAIPS Post Correspondent DALLAS - After cruising through the playoffs, Back Moun- tain was stopped 3-1 Monday by Wyoming /West Wyoming in a game played at the Dallas High School field. Back Mountain will have to beat Wyoming /West Wyo- ming Wednesday to win the Se- nior League district title. Managed by Dave Katyl, the team is comprised of the best 14 and 15-year-old players from five Back Mountain teams. The All-Star team consists of 14 players, the best players the Back Mountain has to offer in their age group Katyl feels. “They are all solid ball players,” he said. One of the team’s biggest quali- Racers sail under sunny skies The Sunday Sailboat Race Se- ries at Harveys Lake took place under typical summer conditions. The temperature was over 90 de- grees, the wind registered from O-. 5 knots and at times came from every point of the compass. The sailors, even under these condi- tions, exhibited enthusiasm for their sport. The course was a modified Gold Cup and shortened to 3.5 miles because of the lack of wind. The handicap section of the event was won by Joan Williams and Jane Harter sailing a Comet, second place went to Bob Hall and Barbara Aston, crew, sailing a Lightning, third place was Kevin Blaum and Commander Kevin McDermott Ret. USN. The following teams also sailed: Lane Giddings /Fred Shaefer; Dr. John Alaimo/Paul Bennett; John Morris; Karl Arbogast with crew, John Ryder and Chris Ryder of Yardley, PA. The Comet event was won by Joan Williams and Jane Harter in one hour and 45 minutes. Sec- ond place went to Dr. John Alaimo and Paul Bennett, native of En- gland; Lane Giddings and Fred Shaefer were third. The Mobjack race was won by Karl Arbogast with John and Chris Ryder. The race committee consisted of Frank Wadas, chairman and Scott Shuster assisted by Shane Snyder and Allison Snyder. Boating courtesy and safety was the order of the day with motor boats avoiding the racers. The team has played to- gether for years. ‘Second baseman /pitcher Matt Wycallis said they all get along well. “Ev- eryone gets to play,” he said. “They work well as a unit,” Katyl added. Mike Faneck, who pitches and plays infield, said the team gets along well because they go to the same schools, and they're all friends. “There's a lot of chemis- try,” he said. “Everyone has a positive attitude.” Katyl believes the most impor- tant part of their work ethic is that they all hustle. “With only nine positions and 14 players, they all want starting positions,” he said. In a team full of talent, there isn’t just one player who contrib- utes the most. “It’s a team effort,” Katyl said. The abundance of tal- ent makes Katyl’s job of coaching difficult because, he said, “they're all so good.” Still, there are some players who have stood out. Chuck White- head has had four home runs in the last four games. Wycallis has the highest batting average. It is obvious the players enjoy being on the all-star team. Faneck enjoys being on the same team with his friends, especially since they've played against each other during the regular season. The team motto is, “Take care of business, and then enjoy the ~ game.” When their talent allows them a comfortable lead, the all- stars can enjoy the game as friends. They'll be hoping to take care of business Wednesday at 5:30 at Wyoming. The task will be made easier because Mike Gerney, Monday's winning pitcher, won't be on the mound. He held the high-scoring Back Mountain squad to a first-inning run, strik- ing out five and walking three. Back Mountain's only score came when Chuck Whitehead singled to drive home Dan Faneck. Faneck and Mike Regan ended the night with two hits each, and Mike Sabol stroked a double.
