Harveys Lake 2 - Wyo./West Wyo. 1 Dustin Kapson hurled a one- hitter as Harveys Lake knocked off Wyoming/West Wyoming in the opening round of the District 16 tourney. Kapson fanned 13 and issued only three walks in the eighth-inning affair. Wyo- ming/West Wyoming struck first with a run in the fourth. Bret Gibbons singled and came around to score on an error. Harveys Lake answered in their half as Phil Kasper walked and scored on an RBI single by Matt Ide. Kapson led off the bottom of the eighth with a double and tallied the win- ning run on an infield error. Greg Kostrobala had the only other Harveys Lake hit. Robby Licata took the loss in a strong effort limiting Harveys Lake to three hits and striking out 14. W. Devils battle to tourney title The travel team recently competed in a tournament in Vestal, NY, playing against some very skilled, aggressive teams. Being down 3-0 with 17 minutes remaining, the girls were able to put together a terrific effort and come back to tie the gme. With two minutes left, they scored one more goal and won 4-3. Brennan tournament results . Thirty foursomes responded to the St. Therese's Joe Brennan Memorial Tournament held on Friday at the Four Seasons Golf Course in Exeter. Co-chairpersons for the event were Gary and Fran Williams. Pastor of St. Therese's is Fr. Peter Crynes. Prizes were awarded in three flights, Men's, Women’s and Mixed. ' Winners in the Men's flight were Ron Masitis, John Stubeda, Walter Cuba and Bob Considine. . In the Women’s division: Joan Adams, Rita Kaminski, Connie Rado and Marion Pollock. * In the Mixed division: Jean Brennan, Bill Dantona, Randy Vaskas and Marlene Smith. : . Tom Kilduff pounded the longest drive on hole #1. Marie Barbose’s accuracy gave her the closest to the line on hole #17, and a sharp eye gave Bob Paley closest to the pin on #6 and on #8 Tom Sheridan took the prize for closest to the pin. Tom Sheridan also won the drawing for the Pot O' Gold for holding green on hole #12. An avid golfer, Joe Brennan was actively involved in St. Therese’s parish and was one of the founders of the Shavertown church's golf tournament beginning in 1991. Following his death in 1993, the committee renamed the event in his memory. The annual tournament has grown to become a successful fund raiser for the parish. Back Mt. Senior League Back Mt. Katyl led the Pirate hitters with three hits followed by Ryan Sorber’s two hits including a bases clearing triple. Dan Fetko added two hits to round out the Pirate hitting. Back Mt. Pirates -9 Back Mt. Rockies - 8 . Ryan Sorber earned the mound victory allowing only two runs through four innings of work. J.B. Bucha, Josh Lesinski and Josh Katyl had two hits each. Chuck Whitehead added a double for the Rockies. Wyoming/ W. Wyoming 2-2 Back Mt. Pirates - 1 Wyoming's Michael Gerney battled Pirate pitchers Ryan Sorber and Matt Wycallis. Winning pitcher Gerney struck out 12 Pirates while scattering seven hits. Sorber and Wycallis struck out seven while giving up five hits. John Giorgio had two doubles and Matt Russo added two hits to pace the Wyoming attack. Dan Fetko led the Pirate hitters with three hits, Sorber added two hits with Josh Katyl adding a double. Bucknell baseball coach Eugene Depew said he would like to have Mike as a baseball player however, Mike will probably play football at Bucknell this fall. If football doesn’t work out he will then prob- ably play baseball. Academically Mike is in the top 10 of his class of 140 and scored 1400 SAT. Mike is looking for- ward to being a student athlete at Bucknell, but realizes he cannot play football and baseball and maintain his academics. He will do well whatever he chooses to do.” Mike was co-captain of the Lake-Lehman baseball team and has helped lead them to confer- ence championships in 1996 and 1997. Most recently Mike was selected M.V.P. of the W.V.C. AA Baseball League. Most valuable at Sem Wyoming Seminary recently named its winter Most Valuable Players.
