Hard work takes Black Knights to state playoffs a By JENNIFER KLAIPS Post Correspondent LEHMAN - The Lake-Lehman Knights baseball players have come together as a team over the season to achieve their goal of reaching the state playoffs. They are ranked among the top 16 teams in the state for Class AA. The Knights (15-2) defeated Dunmore, 10-4 on May 23, ad- vancing them to the District 2 Class AA title game. This game will be played Wed., May 28 against Bishop Hannan at Lackawanna County Stadium. Win or lose in that game, Friday's victory over Dunmore qualified the Knights for state playoffs be- ginning Monday, June 2. Coach Chip Sorber believes hard work got the Knights to where they are now. The Knights held a summer program for the last two years to help the players. Most of the starters have gone to the base- ball workout, and Sorber believes their hard work is the reason for the team’s success. “Everyone who is on the team wants to be there,” said senior Mike Woronko. With a relaxed work ethic, no one was forced to practice. The team worked hard because they wanted to play. The team’s inexperience and youth made their potential ques- tionable in the beginning of the season. “At first we had an un- settled lineup There were a lot of freshmen and sophomores, but they've earned their respect,” Sorber said. The Knights’ biggest strength lies in the offense. Sorber explained, “We're a very good hit- ting team.” The defense and pitch- ing have improved as the season progressed. Co-captain Mike Woronko (9- 0) was the winning pitcher in Lehman's victory on Friday. “In the entire lineup, one through nine, everyone can hit well,” Woronko said. “The defense is coming along, and the middle in- field is getting better.” Woronko BMT BASEBALL RESULTS BASEBALL-MAJORS A’s 14, Yanks 4 Jeff Dixon was the winning pitcher with 10 strikeouts.
