DeWitt Smith, 75, of Newberry Estate, Dallas, and Naples, FL, died Jan. 10, 1997, at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospi- tal. Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Col. Ernest and Marjorie Harvey Smith. He graduated from Wyoming Seminary in 1938. He attended Williams College and graduated from Lafayette College, Easton, ‘where he played football and captained the swimming and golf teams. He served as a captain with the U.S. Army during World War II in Africa and Italy. He was the former president of the Wilkes-Barre Publishing Co. He resided in the Back Moun- tain most of his life. He was a member of the board of directors of the Wyoming Valley Motor Club; the board of directors and executive committee of the Economic Development Council of Northeastern Pennsylvania; the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce; the Wilkes-Barre Ad- visory Board of Northeastern Bank. He was president of Area In- dustrial Development, Inc., and a former chairman of the Luzerne County Tourist Promotion Agency, the Labor/Management Citizens’ Committee. ANNA AUSTIN Anna M. Austin, 88, of Harveys Lake, died Jan. 27, 1997, at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Born in Old Forge, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Ida Brown Felter. She was employed by the former Pomoroy’s Department Store, - Wilkes-Barre, for many years. She lived at Harveys Lake for the past 30 years. She was a member of Ruggles United Methodist Church, Lake Township. She also volunteered at the American Red Cross and Meadows Nursing Center, for 10 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Kenneth Austin and a sister, Arrena Reese. : Surviving are a son, Charles S., Harveys Lake; a daughter, Marjorie A.
