Lehman 52, Pittston 33 The Lady Knights jumped out to a 26-14 lead at the half and never looked back as they am- bushed Pittston 52-33 Dec. 11. - Kelly Spencer racked up 15 points for Lehman including three three- pointers. Darby Wolfe tallied 11 while Faith O'Dell sank 10 for the spoilers. Lehman 85, W.S. Tech 17 The Lady Knights were ungra- cious hosts as they ran up a 50-8 lead at the halfen route toa 85-17 rout of W.S.Tech Dec.13. Kelly Spencer pumped in 16 while & Darby Wolfe sailed 13 and Adrienne Miroslaw rallied 10 for the victors. The Knights were per- fect at the line hitting three of three. O’Reilly 53, Dallas 41 The Lady Mounts started off the first game of the W.V. confer- ence season with a disappointing loss to O'Reilly 53-41 Dec. 13. Katie Austin was the threat for Dallas @ pumping in 13 followed by ‘Adrienne Camp with 9 including ‘a three-point jumper. { — Lehman 68, O'Reilly 58 Kelly Spencer sank a game high 22 points to pace the Knights past O'Reilly 68-58 Dec.16. Nicki Bouthot chipped away racking up 16 and Darby Wolfe added nine. Spencer again displayed her long shot ability with a pair of three pointers. Dallas 48, Northwest 44 Dallas took their first confer- ence win of the season behind the sharp shooting of Adrienne Camp who netted 13 points as Dallas bested Northwest 48-44 Dec. 16. Despite trailing 16-25 at the half the Lady Mounts showed their depth with 32 points in the sec- ond half to claim the win. Nicole Nackley drilled 12 for Dallas. BOYS BASKETBALL Pittston 62, Lehman 36 The Black Knights were unable to squelch the consistent shoot- ing of the Patriots two hot shoot- ers who combined for 33 of the Patriots 62 points as Lehman fell MEETS NEW NoTRE DAME FOOTBALL COACH Nathan Carr, a third grader at Gate of Heaven School, met new Notre Dame head football coach Bob Davie while in the University to see Notre Dame play Air Force. The two teams were deadlocked at 23 at the half but Hoban commanded the sec- ond half outscoring Dallas 42-25 to take the win. J.J. Smith was the high scorer for Dallas with 15 followed by Jonathan Saba with 11. O’Reilly 74, Dallas 51 J.J.Smith sank 22 points for the Mounts but did not have the support to overcome take the Queensmen as O'Reilly downed Dallas 74-51 in the Conference opener Dec. 14. Ed Piekara buck- eted seven while Dan Nichols hit eight. Dallas was 13 for 16 at the line. Lehman 72, W.S. Tech 63 Dave Milunic showered the net and came away with a game high 30 points for the Knights as Leh- man opened their season with a 72-63 victory over W.S. Tech Dec.14. Russ Mosier dumped in 12 for the spoilers. BOYS SWIMMING Hazleton 120, Dallas 63 Matt Schweitzer took part in all three of the Mounts wins placing first in the 200- (2:00.46) and 500- (5:29.62) freestyle and an- choring the 400 freestyle relay (3:51.66) but it was not enough to More SPORTS SHORTS, pg 12 Magic hand Bulls first loss of season The standings tightened up last weekend in Dallas Youth Basket- ball 7th and 8th grade play. The Magic squeaked by the previously unbeaten Bulls 47-46, giving those two teams plus the Heat, Sixers and Celtics identical 3-1 records. But something has to give, and after next weekend at least two of those teams will have a second loss. Scores from Dec. 15: HEAT 50 - HORNETS 24 In week four, the Heat got back on the winning track, by posting a 50-24 win over the Hornets. The Heat took a 9-6 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter the Heat exploded with a combi- nation of inside and outside shoot- ing along with a fine display of defense to outscore the Hornets 16-2, and take a 27-8 halftime lead. It was much the same in the third and fourth quarters, with Lady Gators the Heat scoring at will. The Heat's offensive scoring was well balanced. Kevin Piekara led off with a game-high 12 points, fol- lowed by Jared Flowers with 10 points, Fran Yanik with 9 points and Jason Race and Mike Domzalski with 8 points apiece. The Hornets’ offense was led by Pat Barnard with 10 points, fol- lowed by Kevin Razawich with 6 points, and Andrew Dale and Ryan Morgan with 4 points apiece. The Heat's record goes to 3-1, while the Hornets drop to 1-3. SIXERS 34 - WARRIORS 21 In the second game of the after- noon, the Sixers defeated the Warriors 34-21. At the end of the first quarter, the Sixers held a slim 10-7 lead over the Warriors. The Sixers outscored the War- riors in the second quarter by a 7 See BULLS, pg 10 begin season unbeaten, tourney victors The Lady Gators Eighth Grade Varsity team started off the sea- son with four convincing wins. This is the same team that won the Wyoming Valley Catholic Girls league last year and is playing in the East-West Parochial league this year. The first four victories included wins over Sacred Heart of Wilkes- Barre, Holy Child of Plymouth, St. Nicks/St. Mary's of Wilkes-Barre and Pope John Paul of Nanticoke. The Lady Gators are led this year by tri-captains, Shannon Leary, Chelsey Ostrowsky and Katie Guntli. Filling out the rest of the team is Shannon Lupien, Jocelyn Kozick, Ali Hutch, Jessica Holton, Sam Leandri, Beth Charnick, Laura Charnick, Jennifer Hummler, Kim Urban, Jamie Pikul and Jackie Reisser. On Nov. 18, the Gate of Heaven girls varsity team won the Knights of Columbus Tournament held at the Regis Academy gym in Swoyersville. The Gator team is the third consecutive team from Gate of Heaven to have won the tournament. Inthe first game the Lady Gators disposed of St. John's the Baptist of Pittston. Next the Gators handled Wyo- ming Area Catholic then St. Mary's of Old Forge. In the champion- ship game the Gators defeated 31. Leading the Lady Gators were Chelsey Ostrowsky with 18 points and Katie Guntli with 11. At least in Dallas, St. John's wins David Lohin scored 16 points to lead St. John's to a 43-21 vic- tory over Boston College in Dallas Youth Basketball 5th/6th grade action. Also scoring for St. John’s were Brett Sprau with 10, Mark Kertesz with 8, Mike Fehlinger with 7 and Sean Gilroy with 2 points. St. John's is coached by Herb Fehlinger. For Boston College, Mike En- glish had 10 points and 8 re- bounds while Jonathan Barbose had 8 points and 27 rebounds. Also scoring for the Eagles were Matt Rattigan with 2 points and Mike Yurchak with 1. Boston college is coached by Tony Barbose. GOH boys split with St. Jude's, Regis The Gate of Heaven JV team lost to St. Jude's on Dec. 9, by a score of 36-29. The GOH team was led by David Lohin 14 points and John Slaby 6 points. The GOH varsity team beat St. Jude's by a score of 53-39. The GOH team was led by B. Feleccia, 24 points, J.C. DeRojas 14 points and A. Lohin 13 points. On Dec. 11, the regular basketball season started and the GOH JV team lost to Regis 47-29. The JV team was led by C. Donnelly 10 points and D. Lohin 8 points. The GOH varsity team beat Regis 63-50. The GOH win was led by B. Feleccia’s 24 points and J.C. DeRojas 22 points. Record 1-0. Stikers place at Eastern Pike The Noxen Strikers wrestled in the Eastern Pike tournament on Dec. 7 and placed five wrestlers. Mike Stolarick was outstanding wrestler at bantam, 70 lbs. Other winners were pee wee division, Matt Shaw, 50 lbs., fourth place; bantam division, Stolarik, 70 lbs., first place; midget division, Andrew Shaw, 65 Ibs., first place; Brian Goeringer, 70 Ibs., fourth place and junior division John Houssock, 65 Ibs., third place and 70 Ibs., fourth place.
