The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, December 11,1996 3 Planned hunt in park a Shaughiey 8 “By RONALD BARTIZEK » Post Staff ¥ ry .*. KINGSTON TWP. - Some of the people who turned out for ‘Saturday's protest against a deer ‘hunt in Frances Slocum Park were ‘die-hard animal rights activists. ‘Others were people who simply believe shooting nearly tame deer is more bloodbath than sport. ‘A handful of the approximately 25 people who braved a cold rain fo. make their point were neigh- bors. and users of the park, who have become fond of the deer that frequent picnic areas and other locations where they mingle with park visitors. Most of the rest were members or followers of Jus- tice For Animals, a Shavertown- based group led by Melinda Dugan. Nikki LaVenda has lived nearby for 26 years, and says she is “al- ways in the park,” and has never seen a dead deer. While she isn’t opposed to hunting, she thinks the proposed two-day hunt, sched- uled for Dec. 16 and 17, isn't fair. “Ithink it's a shame, because they are so tame,” she said. “I tried to chase them away once, and they welldn't even go.” critics say “I tried to chase them away once, ar d they LaVenda and Bill Jesse, Ed- wardsville, carried posters that held photos of deer and people close enough to touch. LaVenda has another reason to oppose hunting in the park. Last year, a hunter shot a deer just off her property, and followed it into her backyard, where it died. The hunter then slit the animal's throat on her patio, staining it with blood. If the hunt goes forward, the state will issue 40 permits per day, good for one anterless deer. Hunters must use shotguns with slugs or muzzle loading rifles, and will be permitted in the park from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hunting is already allowed in about 300 wooded acres of the 1,000 acre park. This hunt will take place in the other 700 acres, which include the picnic areas, campgrounds and other public areas. The park will be closed to POST PHOTO/RON BARTIZEK Nikki LaVenda, left, and Bill Jesse carried posters showing nearly tame deer in Frances Slocum Park. They both oppose the two-day hunt, planned for Dec. 16 and 17. other visitors during the hunt. Park ranger Wilmer Faux said a survey earlier this year showed a deer population of 107, an in- crease of one from last year. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources estimates the park should support only 27 deer, and maintains that the larger population is destroying vegeta- tion. He guessed the hunt will go on unless state officials intervene to stop it. “True hunters don’t consider this a hunt,” LaVenda said. “It’s just a slaughter.” Lehman Volunteer Fire Co. elects officers for '97 The Lehman Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company held elec- tions for the coming year at its most recent meeting on Sun., Dec. 8, at the Fire Hall.
