-— The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Thursday, December 28, 1995 3 Taxes same Fy dl | eT i - <3 by i. in borough's final budget By ANN POEPPERLING Post Correspondent Attheirregular meeting Thurs- day evening, Dallas Borough Council approved the 1996 budget of $630,449 which holds the line on all borough taxes from last year, including the property tax, which remains at 20 mills. The largest sources of revenue are the earned income tax, which will bring in $256,000, half of which is shared with the Dallas School District, and real estate taxes, which will net $152,000. The largest personnel salary increases benefit the police de- partment, with officers receiving a $1,000 raise across the board. In the police report, William Peiffer proposed hiring two part- time police officers, Paul Joseph Feeney of Larksville and David Allen Rinehimer of Shavertown. According to police chief Jack Fowler, the part-timers are needed to replace officer Martin Maran- sky who recently resigned to ac- cept a full-time position with another municipality, and officer Ronald Chupas, who will be off the job for an unknown length of time due to an injury received while on duty. Council approved hiring the part-time officers on a conditional probationary period at a rate of $8.50 per hour. In other business, borough manager Milton Lutsey received a letter from PennDOT district traf- fic engineers which indicates that according to traffic counts, a traf- fic signal may be necessary be- tween the Dallas Shopping Cen- and Orloski’s on Route 309. Both developers were ap- proached, the letter states and were receptive to paying for the installation of a traffic signal, which may cost as much as $50,000, according to Lutsey. However, should Dallas Bor- ough be responsible for maintain- ing the proposed traffic signal, it could be “an absolute disaster” according to borough solicitor Ted Krohn because “there's always a liability involved,” adding that he's not against the idea. The four- way traffic at the intersection of Route 309 and the two shopping areas as well as the timing of the light with other nearby traffic signals could be quite complex. Generally, the borough pays for the maintenance contract and electrical service ofall traffic lights in the borough, according to Lut- sey, while PennDOT installs the signals. Council tabled the plan for further discussion with develop- ers and PennDOT at next month's meeting. Soup/salad supper at Mt. Zion church The Mt. Are short skis easier to skion? A: For beginners and occasional skiers, yes. They can be easily twisted sideways to turn. The drawbacks are that they don't hold on ice and promote poor technique. Longer skis help to make better skiers.
