Students gain from first OBE projects By VALERIE WOLFE Student Correspondent Since Lake-Lehman School District is a phase one district, it must begin to prepare for the new Chapter 5 regulations. Under the new regulations, the freshman class entering Lehman in Sep- tember, 1995 will be the first class required to complete 53 students’ learning outcomes and complete a graduation project. To make sure that the organi- zation of the graduation project will be operational, it is necessary to pilot the project. In January of this year, several students volunteered to take part in the program. Two Advanced Placement Chemistry students, Shannon Kelly and Chris Pagoda, perform science experiments once a week for 5th graders in the Lehman-Jackson Elementary School. Playing the role of Mr. Wizard, Shannon and Chris cover science projects that involve dis- secting frogs, coating pennies with zinc to make them look like gold, and creating chemical gardens which contain home-made crys- Aals. By performing such experi: , ~..ments, the children see a brighter... side of science. x Advanced Placement Spanish students Jennifer Feehan, Sonya Sabaluski, Melissa O'Donnell and Kim Frederick and four Independ- ent Study French students, Judy Sichler, Beth Kelly, Cara Nygren, and Tiffany Roese, share their knowledge of language with fourth graders two times a week at the Lehman-Jackson Elementary School. To teach kids the basics of the foreign language, the girls use creative props. For example, a fruit salad was used to help the kids learn the fruits names and the game Simon Says was played tointroduce the kids tobody parts. These various exercises give the children an opportunity to possi- bly see which language they would like to take in high school. For their participation in this program, students receive an extra grade which is averaged into their other academic studies. Before receiving an extra grade, volun- teers must fulfill all of the pro- ject's criteria. The essential crite- ria consists of a journal showing everything they have accom- plished. a video which presents the individual student teaching, and a senior presentation. Stu- dents are also required to meet with facilitator Mrs. Jeris Bara- nowskiy every.two weeks to ana- lyze and evaluate the progress. The pilot program will continue for the next three years. By the time the class of 1999 becomes seniors, Lake-Lehman hopes to have its hands on a well-organ- ized program. Lake-Lehman Middle Level lists third period honor roll Robert O.
