High School. One of these impor- tant, but often overlooked groups is the peer helpers. The idea of peer helpers began when teachers noticed that stu- dents talked to other students " more than to adults. Speaking with a person close to the same age encourages students to open ~ up and express problems that are _ troubling them. In order to meet these needs, a selection of stu- dents is chosen each year by their . peers. In making a decision, peers look for people who are caring, concerned and involved. The 32 peer helpers are thor- oughly instructed before taking on this important job. Once a + month, speakers are brought in - by the guidance department to * speak to the peer helpers on vari- ~ ous social problems kids face. They also attend informative workshops. For instance, they ' attended an AIDS and STD dis- ease workshop. Peer helpers learned valuable information that ~ theylater passed on to junior high ~ students. Besides workshops and speak- ers, peer helpers attend a two-day retreat in the mountains. While enjoying this beautiful area, the students are taught skills in deci- . sion making, reflective reasoning _ Area Wilkes graduates and referral to adults when the situation becomes more serious. Overall, the peer helpers per- form many tasks. The serve as tutors in the junior high and ele- mentary, welcomers to new stu- dents, and are considered listen- ing ears to those in distress. Peer helpers are also involved with special programs. The seniors do a program in which they speak to freshman about suicide preven- tion. The freshman peer helpers are also involved with special programs. Around Christmas time, the freshman peer helpers provide a needy family in th area with presents and holiday cheer. The peer helpers enjoy taking part in this seven year old out- reach program. John Oliver, an 11th grade peer helper, says, “Iti interesting to see the kids mature as I tutor them. In the beginning they were scared to share things with me. Now, they open up and tell me everything before I even ask.” John sees peer helping as a stepping stone to a possible fu- ture in communication. The peer helpers become at- tached to the younger children as they act as a big brother /big sis- ter. J.J. Kopko, alsoa 11th grader peer helper, stresses the point that younger children also need to be looked after, since they are the future students at Lake- Lehman. “It is important to help younger kids, not only peers,” says J.J. Dr. Christopher N. Breiseth, president of Wilkes University, recently awarded 91 bachelor's degrees and 13 master's degrees during winter commencement exercises held January 26 in the Arnaud C. Marts ' Sports and Conference Center. Back Mountain graduates are: Barry D. Wood, Dallas, Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. Susan Fried, Dallas, Master of Science in Nursing.
