I served four years as first assistant district attorney in Luzerne County,” Lemmond said. “I decry the use of forged or fraudulent mail to spread political or moral untruths.” The controversial letterhead contains the wrong address, phone number and committee assignments, she added. Mundy said she has “nothing but the highest regard for the churches and clergy of all the faiths in my district.” “This isn’t just a political prank or dirty trick — it’s a crime.” Phyllis Mundy State Representative “Such negative, abusive crimi- nal activity could prevent other honest people in the area from running for office in the future,” she said. So, let's start with a lesser known Dallas and the farthest from us geographically. Dallas, Oregon, 60 miles south- west of Portland, is located in Polk County. Dallas is within an hour of the Pacific Ocean beaches. The town of over 9,000 people stands at the foot of the Coast Mountain Range where the eastern slope descends into the beautiful Wil- lamette Valley. The Cascade Mountains bor- der the east side of the Willamette Valley and place Dallas at 365 feet above sea level but within an hour's drive of winter sports ar- eas. A major showplace is Dallas's beautiful 35-acre city park. Dal- las Public Library is operated by the city and houses about 35,000 books with a 154,000 book and material annual circulation. The Polk County Itemizer-Observeris a weekly newspaper published in Dallas. The Valley Community Hospital in Dallas, a 44 bed facil- ity, attracts patients from all over Polk County. The 1990 school enrollment was 2,800 students. As the county seat, Dallas, Oregon's growth has been steady, and its economic stability assured by a mix of manufacturing, forest products, agriculture, retail and service industries. With the sec- ond largest population and being the farthest from our Dallas, the Oregon counterpart seems like a nice place to live. Next week a look at the small Dallases down South. We can rely on their experience.” Nearly 25 people attended Sunday's meeting and said they would back the fire company in a fund drive, Wentzel said. Donations and offers of help have also come in. The Harveys Lake Lions, who use the hall for meetings, have donated $250, while businesses have promised to donate raffle prizes.
