He was a U.S. Army veteran of ~ World War Il, having served in the 272nd Infantry’s 69th Division at the Battle of the Bulge under Gen. George S. Patton. He was employed for six years as a supervisor at the Pennhurst State School, White Haven. He was then employed as a Wilkes-Barre police officer for 25 years, retiring Aug. 1981. He was preceded in death by Brother, William Hine, sister, Bertha H. O'Brien. He and his wife, the former Claire Mather, celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary, May 14. Santos Jr., 72, of Maple Drive, Swoyersville, pro- fessor of the music department of Wilkes University and a member of the faculty since 1968, died Nov. 4, 1994, at home following an illness. Born in Cavite City, Philippines, on Sept. 3, 1922, he was the son of the late Rosendo and Castora Santos. He was educated in the Cavite Schools and was a graduate of the University of the Philippines, Conservatory of Music, where he later served as a faculty member. At age 11, he started compos- ing band marches, instrumental and vocal solos. and Caiholic Masses. He was a United ‘Nations Edu- cational, Scientific and Cultural Organizational scholar and re- ceived the Composer of the Year award. He most recently received the title “The Philippine Composer of the Century.” He was awarded his master's degree in theory and composition at Catholic University of America, Washington D.C. He later served on the faculty of Catholic University and Howard University. In 1968, he joined the faculty of Wilkes University. While teach- ing he performed as a timpanist, pianist and conductor with sev- eral orchestral groups. He most recently conducted the choirs at Lehman and Huntsville Methodist Churches and Shaver- town United Methodist Church, where his wife, the Rev. Harriet M. Santos, serves as pastor. He has more than 1000 musi- cal compositions in the library of the University of the Philippines. He was an honored member of the Senior Mozart Club of Wyo- ming. Since coming to the Wyoming Valley in 1968, he taught more than 2,000 children and youths during private musical lessons. His last musical work is en- titled “Melinda's Masquarade” a ballet scheduled to be performed in 1995. He was a member of the Shav- ertown United Methodist Church. Surviving in addition to his wife, are sons, Erik, Ann Arbor, Mich.; Nathan, Johnstown; Jason, at home; sisters. Luz de Guzman and Naty Salazar, both of Philip- pines; numerous niecesand neph- | ews. All three sons are professional musicians. Celebrative memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the Shavertown United Methodist Church, N. Pioneer Ave., Shaver- town, with the Rev.James A.
