Knights come back for win By LYNN OLDHAM Sports Correspondent . Despite a slow offensive start against Crestwood last Saturday, Lake-Lehman’s Black Knights rebounded in the second half to overtake the Comets 14-6. . Lake-Lehman kept the Comets scoreless in the first quarter by playing superb defense. In the second quarter of play, the Black Knight defense allowed six points to Crestwood, who stopped the Knight offense cold. : When asked what he said to the players at halftime to sharpen their game, Coach Rich Gorgone said, “I think a unique thing happened when I went into the locker room. The guys were talk- ing to each other about the game. They were disappointed in their performance. We just fed on that, but they did a lot on their own.” The Black Knight offense awak- ened in the second half, as their first drive of the third quarter covered 84 yards in seven plays. The drive was capped by a 20- yard touchdown run by junior Mike Pitcavage, who played a key role in advancing the ball for Lake- Lehman throughout the game. Pitcavage gained 64 yards on this drive alone and finished the game with over 60 percent of Lenman’s total rushing yards. John Oliver kicked the point-after, and Lehman took the lead 7-6. Quarterback Oliver again turned to Pitcavage’s rushing ability in the next Black Knight drive as they advanced the ball with the help of junior Mike Adam- shick. When Pitcavage left the game with a back injury, he was replaced by reserve tailback, Mark Ronczka, who barreled into the endzone from three yards out for the final touchdown of the game. Oliver's extra point was good, bringing the score to 14-6. Gorgone praised Pitcavage stat- ing, “He's a really good player. He's one of the four or five really skilled players on the team.” Even though Pitcavage left the game in the fourth quarter with a back injury, Gorgone is optimistic about his ability to play in Saturday's game agaisnt Bishop Hoban. “Yes, I think he's o.k. He twisted his back a little. It's a day by day thing. He's a tough little guy.” Lake-Lehman meets Bishop Hoban this Saturday for a night game. Asked if the Knights would relax against last-place Hoban, Gorgone said, “We have to play really good football and try to get a comfortable lead. We have to show up ready to play. We can't just expect to go in and play our second stringers.” Mahalak takes sixth week football contest top prize Dave Mahalak was tops in the sixth week of the Power Points PA football contest. Defense leads Mounts By LYNN OLDHAM Sports Correspondent The Dallas Mountaineers’ de- fense added four more scoreless quarters to their string Saturday, turning away a Meyers challenge on the way to a 21-0 win. The offense relied on a ground game to score three unanswered touchdowns, racking up a total of over 300 yards. Coach Ted Jackson praised his team’s performance at both ends of the field. “"Offensively we did a really good job. This was their best game of the year. The de- fense bent a little, but it didn’ break,” Jackson said. The Mounts’ opening drive led to the first points of the game as tailback Buddy Rhodes grabbed the momentum which never left the Mountaineers. Rhodes rushed for 18 yards on this drive and Mike Viglone and Rich Butcofski helped the Dallas offense make it to theone-yard line. Quarterback Ted Jackson carried the ball in for the score. Jeff Kunkle kicked the point after and brought the Dallas lead to 7-0 in the first quarter. With four minutes left in the half, Jackson looked to Rhodes for the handoff at the Mounts’ 16 and Rhodes barreled all the way for an 84-yard touchdown run, breaking several Mohawk tackles and using tremendous speed to make itinto theendzone. Kunkle's PAT was again good, bringing the score to 14-0. Coach Jackson commented on Rhodes’ display of athleticism, “It was on a draw play. He broke a few tackles and when he got past the defenders, he used great speed to'take it in. It was an impressive run.” Rhodes twisted his ankle in the game, but is expected to play against Nanticoke this weekend. In the second half Meyers showed some offensive promise and made it inside the Dallas 10- yard line, but the Dallas defense shut them down at every turn, never allowing the Mohawks to capitalize on their position. : The Dallas offense would not be stopped, and they came back with another drive early in the third quarter which again ended in seven points. The majority of the 63-yard drive was earned by sophomore tailback Frank Val- vano, who rushed for 29 yards on four plays, filling in for the injured Rhodes. Butcofski contributed a 12-yard run to the drive and Jackson passed to Kunkle for the touchdown from the 8-yard line. Another extra point by Kunkle made the score 21-0. This week, Dallas meets Nanti- coke Area (5-1) which is unbeaten in Division Il of the Wyoming Valley Conference and has scored 219 points in six games.
