Steelman wins biology award from Wilkes Univ. Wilkes University senior Scott Steelman recently received the biology department's Biology Research Award for discovering a : way to estimate the genetic dam- | aged caused by the chromium. With Scott's new twist on this kind of research, scientists can = better estimate the impact of this substance on mice, and perhaps one day, humans, according to Dr. Lester Turoczi, his research supervisor. Heavy metals such as lead and chrome, found in junk yards across the country, may be justas deadly Turoczisaid. As the chrome bumpers and wheels decompose over time, chromium enters the water table. Scientists must learn how this affects the safety of water supplies. Steelman'’s interest in this re- search was fueled by his experi- ence with sophisticated labora- . tory techniques at Thomas Jeffer- son University in Philadelphia last summer. He will return to the University to begin graduate stud- ies this fall. SCOTT STEELMAN Si ( Send your school news to The Dallas Post P.O.
