The Rangers and Phillies won the playoff championships in their respective divisions as Back Mountain Baseball Inc. completed @ cr 1994 post season baseball action. The Rangers, under manager Tom Evans, won the regular season American League title and then captured the AL playoff championship with a 9-6 win over the Tigers in the title game. The Rangers, had advanced to the championship contest with an 11-1 win over the Red Sox in one semi-final, while the Tigers advanced with 25-3 win over the ’s in the other. ~ In the National League, the Phillies, under manager Dave Konopki, won the NL playoff title with a 10-5 win over the Dodgers. The Phillies, who shared the regu- lar season championship with the Dodgers and Giants, advanced to the NL title game with a 13-0 win over the Reds. The Dodgers ad- vanced with an 11-9 win over the Giants. @ Last Thursday night, the two playoff champions squared off with the Rangers capturing the overall playoff championship with a 6-3 win over the Phillies. The Rangers ended their season with arecord of 20-2. Last season, the team finished second in the American. League, with a 21-1 record, th only loss coming in the league title game. The Phillies won 11 of their last 13 games to finish with a 16-6 mark. Members of the American League champions include Mike Faneck, Matt Wycallis, Tim Fan- eck, Darrell Evans, Billy Evans, Nate Hoffman, Brian Vetter, Dennis Brown, Frank Martino, Brian Dempsey, Jake Walter, Chris Organek and Dan Engler. Assistant coaches were Bob Fan- eck and Jerry Wycallis. Members of the National League champions include Chuck Whitehead, Ryan Sorber, Josh Lesinski, Josh Katyl, Matt Hoover, Jesse Schechtman, Jacob Swart- wood, John Slaby, T.C. Harding, Ryan Murphy, Colin Donnelly and Joel Lesinski. Assistant coaches were Doug Whitehead and Mike Lesinski. Playoff Championship RANGERS 6 - PHILLIES 3 The Rangers scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to erase a one-run deficit and cap- ture the Back Mountain Major League baseball playoff champi- onship. Mike Faneck picked up the win, striking out nine in going the distance. Trailing, 2-1, the Rangers parlayed two walks, singles by Darrell Evans and Mike Faneck and an inside-the-park home run by Matt Wycallis into the five runs. BLUE JAYS 14 - ROCKIES 9 Five Blue Jay players had at least two hits, including three by winning pitcher Sam Spencer, to lead the Jays over the Rockies. Joining Spencer with three hits was Harry Hazeltine, including a double. Josh Butler added two doubles for the winners while Frank Valvano and Dan Nichol had two hits apiece. John Barilla led the Rockies with three hits, including a double while Vince Vurakewicz and Corey Stanislow added three and two singles, re- spectively. BLUE JAYS 13 - HARVEYS LAKE 10 Frank Valvano tossed a com- plete game, striking out 11, to lead the Blue Jays over Harveys Lake. Josh Butler had three hits, including a double, for the Jays while Valvano (double), Matt Barnard (double, triple) and Jeff Faneck had two hits apiece. Brian Wesley had a fine game for Har- veys Lake, collecting three hits including a triple. Baker added a pair of hits for Harveys Lake. National League Championship PHILLIES 10 - DODGERS 5 Matt Hoover and Ryan Sorber each had three hits and winning pitcher Chuck Whitehead struck out 12 batters in six innings to lead the Phillies to the National League playoff championship. Whitehead scattered six hits while striking out the side in the third and fifth innings. Faneck went the distance, striking out nine, and giving the Rangers their 42nd win in the past two years. Josh Lesinski and Whitehead also had a double apiece. Ben Brown led the Dodger of- fense with two hits and knocked in four of the five Dodger runs. T.J. Dougherty added a double for the Dodgers while Jared Harteis, John Isaac and Steve Moyer had the other hits for the Dodgers, all singles. American League Championship’ RANGERS 9 - TIGERS 6 Matt Wycallis used his arm and his bat to lead the Rangers. over: Poynton, rolled up The College Misericordia soft- ball team and senior standout Laura Poynton were among the national leaders in several cate- gories, according to the final NCAA Division III softball statistics. Misericordia completed the season at 27-5 and earned a spot in the ECAC playoffs, finishing among the national leaders in four team categories: top 10 in batting average, runs per game, slugging percentage and winning percent- the Tigers in the AL playoff title contest. The Rangers grabbed a 6-0Olead afterone inning and never looked back. Wycallis picked up the mound win, striking out eight and walking just one in five in- nings. At the plate, Wycallis collected two hits along with teammate Tim Faneck. Mike Faneck added a double for the winners. For the Tigers, a trio of players had two hits apiece. U-11 boys finish third The Back Mountain Super Sonics U-11 boys team recently took the Bronze Medal at the 15th Annual Lehigh Valley Soccer Tournament held in Bethlehem, Pa. Dallas High School graduates Laura Poynton and Jim Reynolds and Jen Smith of Lake-Lehman were among 15 athletes in seven sports to receive Most Valuable Player or Coach's Awards. Poynton was named softball team Most Valuable Player, while Smith was presented with the Coach's Award. Reynolds received the golf team Coach's Award. All three players helped their respective teams to Pennsylvania Athletic Conference championships.
