DOVE Post Staff The Dallas Middle School took 75 students and their parents to breakfast June 9, when adminis- trators hosted the school's first academic awards breakfast. “We are recognizing these stu- dents’ citizenship, leadership and academic achievements. Many of them wouldn't have been recog- nized in any other way,” said prin- ~ cipal Anthony Martinelli. “We want to balance our recognition of ath- letes with other types of student leaders and achievers.” He added that the breakfast is part of the faculty's and admini- stration’s efforts to help the stu- dents realize it's acceptable to be smart and an academic achiever. ‘Students receiving the Presi- dential Academic Fitness awards for maintaining a 3.2 grade aver- age and scoring 90 percent or more on standardized tests, Cen- ter for Talented Youth certificates and recognition for attaining academic Honors With Distinc- tion for haivng a grade point aver- age of 3.8 or better joined their parents and guidance counselors for a breakfast provided by the cafeteria staff. David Williams, who has set a new school record of perfect at- tendance for grades six, seven and eight, received a special award from guidance counselor Raelene D. Olszewski. : Presidents of the sixth. seventh and eighth grade bands, student council, library club, SADD and the editor of the school newspa- per were also recognized. “The parents’ response was overwhelming,” Martinelli said. “They appreciated their children's recognition.” He plans to hold a similar break- fast next year as an incentive for the students to continue to im- prove their grades and participa- tion in school projects.
