Your donation of an item or money : Letters Reassessment only solution to tax reform Editor, I am opposed to HB 2202 in its current form. It seems to me that it amounts to little more than another raid on my wallet by an ever-growing voracious govern- ment. I'm an “Old Geezer” now trying to get by on Social Security and the savings I accumulated over the years. For me, any increase in taxes means a reduc- tion in assets (savings). I realize the property tax is not fairly assessed. Likeyou, bought my home long ago when the dollar was worth a lot more (nearly double). Clearly, newer home owners are being “robbed”. But, I suggest the answer is reassess- ment rather than abandonment of the property tax in favor of the income tax. As I see it, the clamor for ex- panded taxing authority is fos- tered primarily by the demands of the Teachers Union for expanding wages and benefits while over- burdened property owners are beginning to resist with increas- ing vigor. The fact that the S.A.T. scores in public schools have been declining for more than a decade (while they have not in private schools) leads one to believe that something is very wrong with the public school system. (For ex- ample, in spite ofthe S.A.T. scores, I doubt that Catholics are inher- ently any brighter than other kids.) As long as the Teacher's Union has the right to strike and to shut down the public schools, I expect that we'll all be stuck with esca- lating property taxes far in excess of so-called “Cost of Living” in creases. Shifting the burden from property taxes to income taxes may reduce taxpayer resistance to teachers’ demands, but it won't improve the public educational system. Hugh P. The Book Club met for its final time until Fall and had a special program given by the Rev. James Wert of Shavertown United Meth- odist Church on one of his favor- ite subjects: trolleys! It was a very interesting and enlightening pro- gram complete with maps of the old trolleys, pictures of the trolley stations of old; and copies of “The Trolley Song” which we all read instead of singing. He also showed many of his collectible trolleys and presented two videos about trolleys and the new ‘light rail’ trolleys coming into use in many areas.
