Dallas works on ideas for at-risk students The Dallas School District re- cently hosted a breakfast meeting for representatives from the administration, school board, student ‘assistance teams, par- ents, police, student body, com- munity leaders and members of the medical and mental health communities. The school district sponsors these meetings to bring together groups from the school and com- munity to present to the public what the district is doing in terms of helping at-risk students. The meeting focused on the involvement of the student assis- tance teams. Participants included Fr. John O'Bell, Joan Makowski, Raelene Olszewski, Ellen Nagy, George McCutcheon, Jay Pope, Katie Sallitt, Chief Jim Balavage, Dan Fitzsimmons, William Dougherty and Dr. Gil Griffiths. Presently, there are two teams in the district, one at the Middle School and one at the Senior High School. The group discussed develop- ment of additional parental ‘in- volvement to further the home/ school relationship through par- enting sessions, “Parenting in the 90's,” beginning in the fall of 1994. The district is also exploring ways to involve parents in school programs. Eric cd .
