2 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, June 15, 1994 i. POST PHOTO/GRACE R. DOVE HOT AND SMOKY - Firefighters fought to contain a blaze on Harris Street in Dallas Township last week. The fire gutted the home. Fire (continued from page 1) open the house's front door to see if anyone was at home. No one was. As firefighters attacked the smoky blaze and wet down the roof of the Henninger home next door to protect it, John Henninger walked down the driveway, nerv- ously glancing across the yard to the fire scene. : “So far we're okay," he said. “We have the upstairs windows open on the other side to keep it cool. There's lots of smoke." Firefighters' biggest problems were the great amount of smoke and the fire's extreme heat, exac- erbated by the warm late spring weather, which forced firefighters to work in shifts. “It was very hot, and so smoky that we used up a lot of air packs and had to recharge them,” Slocum said. Dallas Fire and Ambulance Company was assisted at the scene by equipment from Kunkle and Shavertown, a Cascade sys- tem used to recharge air packs from Luzerne, and manpower from Trucksville, Jackson Township, Lehman and Idetown. Charges pending after accident According to Dallas Township police, charges are pending against a West Pittston man in connection with a one-car accident June 6 on Hildebrant Road shortly before 9:30 p.m. "Police said that a 1981 Cadillac operated by William Sheridan, 43, was traveling east on Hildebrant near the entrance to Dallas High School when it left the roadway, traveled for 60 feet across a grassy area and hit a utility pole. Sheridan told police that he didn't know what had happened, according to the report. 288-3500 Mark Plaza, Edwardsville, Rt. 11 586-6000 Rts. 6 & 11, Clarks Summit N.E. DOVE Post Staff The Dallas school board voted to change its earned income tax collector for Kingston Township from Berkheimer Associates to the Wilkinson Agency for next year. Board members noted that using Wilkinson to collect its earned income tax will save town- ship residents from filling out more forms, since Wilkinson already collects Kingston Township's municipal earned income and Act 511 “nuisance” taxes. Voting against the motion, James Richardson and board president Ellen Nagy said that they didn't see any reason to change earned income tax collec- tors. “If it isn't broken, you don't fix it,” Richardson said. “Berkheimer has done a great job.” ; The board retained Berkheimer to collect school earned income taxes in Dallas Borough and Fran- klin Township. The board voted to renew its contract with cafeteria contractor Marriott Management Services because it expects the cafeteria to break even this year. Although a $4,800 deficit for the year remains, cafeteria com- mittee chairman James Richardson reported that the cafe- teria earned a $3,500 profit for April and May. The cafeteria finished last year more than $20,000 in the red. The board accepted bids of . $2,000 and $990 from Ultra-Clean for carpet and window cleaning respectively, a $16,895 bid from . Danella Enviromnental Technolo-, gies for garbage collection and recycling and a $2,678 bid from Lehman Power Equipment for the purchase of two snowblowers. The board voted to appoint Richard K. Morgan supervisor of, buildings and grounds, a position: which he has held as acting super- visor for the past 10 years while a labor dispute was resolved in the court system. Then, the board accepted Morgan's resignation. due to retirement with regret. .- Board president Ellen Nagy. noted that changing Morgan's position from acting supervisor of buildings and grounds to super- . visor was “a symbolic gesture of . the board's appreciation” for Morgan's 10 years of service. The board also approved a list : of student teachers, substitute teachers and other personnel for the 1994-95 school year. At a committee-of-the-whole meeting before the regular board meeting, the board voted to seek bids for two new modular units to replace those presently housing two fifth-grade classes and the computer room at the Westmore- land School.
