FEA dp SE Tunesmith, folksinger, guitar picker, champion yodeler and genuine American troubadour, Bill Staines represents the very essence of American folk music. The author of some of the best-known and loved songs in American folk music, Staines will invite the audience to sing them along with him when he appears at the Chicory House in Wilkes-Barre, Friday, Dec. 10, at 8:30 p.m. A New England native who's spent the better part of his two decades plus career in folk music on the road, entertaining and getting to know people from all parts of the country and walks of life. Staines’ songs grow naturally out of the lives of real people, from ordinary midwestern prairie folk to the adventures of the Yukon. More than a few of his songs have become in turn part of the shared, common experi- ence uniting people across the continent. Staines, a captivating entertainer with a smooth baritone voice and. easygoing manner is also a champion yodeler. He performs not only his own songs but some traditional folk tunes and contemporary country ballads and delights in having the audience participate in many of the num- bers. Between songs his easygoing and low-key stage manner enhances his dry wit and his perfect sense of comic timing. His Chicory House concert will be his first appearance in Northeastern Pennsyl- vania, and the staff of the folk club assures anyone not familiar with his music that they're in for a special treat. Admission to Staines’ Chicory House concert, Friday, Dec. 10 at 8:30 p.m. will be $7 at the door. There are no advance sales or reserved seats; table and other seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Desserts and beverages will be available for purchase. There will also be a good selection of Staines’ tapes and songbooks. For more information on the Staines concert or on future Chicory House presentations, or to become a Chicory House volunteer, phone 675-8843.
