DOVE Where to go if you need food The Back Mountain Food Pantry, administered by the Trucksville United Methodist Church, serves the needs of many needy area families who run low on groceries, either because their food stamps have run out or they are collecting unemployment com- pensation and simply can’t make ends meet. : According to church secretary Cathy Barlow, the Food Pantry services an average of three to five families per week. “During the winter that number doubles because families are also faced with heating expenses,” she said. Boxes of enough groceries for a week are specially packed by volunteers Walter Meade and George Gaylord, who have donated a lot of time to the food pantry. The generosity of the Back Mountain community has gone a long way in helping area families, Ms. Barlow said. Scouts, school groups, service organizations and individuals have all contributed groceries and money to the Back Mountain Food Pantry. Applications for emergency food are screened by the Commis- sion on Economic Opportunity (CEO); area residents may also be referred by their church pastor. Emergency food and other assistance are available through these area service agencies, which can put people in touch with those who can best help meet their needs: » Back Mountain Food Pantry: referrals are made through your church's pastor or the Commission on Economic Opportunity (CEO). . * Commission on Economic Opportunity: 826-0510.
