a me rng , a ® i § § The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, January 27,1993 7 SCHOOL By HOLLY RANDOLPH : Dallas High School Class of 93 On Thursday, Dec. 10, members of the sociology classes of Dallas Senior High School, taught by Mr. Jay Pope, visited the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre, for their “Community Action Day.” The 110 students met in the dining area and were treated to a continental breakfast, served by Medical Center service organization volunteers. It was a very pleasant and comfortable atmosphere. Raymond A. Mazzarella, Chief, Personnel Service/Public Affairs Officer, extended a warm and welcome greeting. The Quadrad (top management) of the Medical Center offered opening remarks, including: Michael M. Linder, Medical Center Director; John J. Hrichison, Acting Associate Medical Center Director; Penelope Popp, Chief Nursing Service; and William K. Grossman, M.D., Chief of Staff. Lee Strickland, Chief, Voluntary Service, who helped organize the visit, divided the students into groups, and they went to their assigned areas. Everyone they worked with was happy to have them there and eager to discuss their occupation. It was a learning experience and the students [ound it interesting to actually help out and interact with the veteran patients. Due to developing hazardous road conditions, the students had to leave the Medical Center earlier than expected. They returned to the dining area and in addition to their own brown-bagged lunch were served cake, iced in Dallas blue and white, ice cream, and soda. ] Tony Lumbis wins Lehman- Jackson Geography Bee Tony Lumbis, a 6th grade student at the Lehman-Jackson Elementary School, recently won the school-level competition of the National Geography Bee and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the [ifth National Geography Bee, which is sponsored by National Geographic WORLD, the society's magazine for children and Amtrak. The school winners, including Tony, will now take a writlen test; up to 100 of the top scorers in each state and territory will be eligible to compete in their state Bee on April 2. The National Georgraphic Society with its co-sponsors will provide an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state champions and their teacher escorts to participate in the National Geography Bee national championship on May 25 and 26. The first-place national winner will receive a $25.000.. college scholarship; the second-place winner will receive a $15,000 college scholarship; and the third- place winner, a $10,000 scholarship. In addition, screening for all prospective students interested in nursery, kindergarten and grades 1 through 8 will also be held on District Chorus Gina Gialanella, Alto 2, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Gialanella of Dallas, is one of six students at Bishop O'Reilly High School who will attend this year’s District 9 Chorus Festival at Valley View High School, February 10-13. An additional $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to a fifth grade student. These scholarships are available to new students not currently enrolled in Wyoming Seminary and are applied = = ” o a {FY Fis to the students’ first year at the Lower School for the 1993-94 academic year. Students may choose one of the three dates on which to take the exam. Deadline for the final exam opportunity is April 1. D. Allan Woodard, dean of Wyoming Seminary Lower School, encourages families who warrant assistance beyond the meritaward to apply for financial aid. Wyoming Seminary awarded more than $300,000 in financial aid to Lower School students in the 1992-93 academic year.
