DOVE afoot, but I didn't think that it Post Staff Dallas artist Sue Hand presented paintings and prints of six original Back Mountain scenes to the Dallas Borough council January 19, in honor of Mayor Paul LaBar's many years of service to the borough. LaBar, 75, is beginning his eleventh year as mayor and was an active firefighter for many years before becoming the ambulance driver. “I've always wanted to do something special for Paul,” Hand said. “He's done so many wonder{ul things for the people of Dallas and I wanted to thank him for all his work.” LaBar has always loved his hometown of Dallas, especially its Main Street, Hand said, calling him a “walking encyclopedia” of area history. Mayor LaBar is the stepfather of Sue Hand's husband, Joe. “1 had suspected around Christmastime that something was would be anything like this,” LaBar said. “I was very surprised and, ol course, very appreciative. I've always liked Sue Hand's work.” Characteristically modest about his lifetime of service, LaBar added that other borough residents also work hard to serve their community. He doesn't think that he does anything special - even when he must excuse himself from a busy borough council meeting to answer an ambulance call. “Mayor LaBar is best known as the Dallas ambulance driver," said borough council president Don Cooper. “He's on call seven days a week, 24 hours a day, sometimes answering calls back-to-back. I seldom see anyone else behind the wheel of the ambulance.” Of Sue Hand's three paintings, two depict scenes of the borough; one overlooking the business district from the Dallas United Methodist Church and the second showing a view of the eastern end Teachers (continued from page 1) son had leaned across a lunch table in the cafeteria to accept a slice of pizza from a friend when Martinelli came up behind him, placed his left arm and hand across the boy's chest and pushed him back down into his seat. Mrs. Jones photographed bruises and abrasions across the right side of her son's chest after the boy was examined by a doctor. The family filed a report of the incident with the Dallas Township police department. RR 288-3671 Nx of Mill Street, where the Dallas Agway is located. “Those are the original shingles on the Agway's roof, laid back in the ‘40's about the time that the airport at DuPont was built. The pilots used them as a navigation guide,” LaBar recalled, pointing to the familiar large, yellow letters on the Agway's roof which spell out "DALLAS." The borough's old Mack firetruck was kept in a shed now used to store lawn mowers behind the Agway, next to the site of the former borough offices and jail alongside the old Free Methodist Church, LLaBar said. The old borough offices have been torn down, but the church now houses the Donald W. Olsen Insurance Agency and the Communications Workers of America, Local 13571. The third painting is a view of the “bus barn” on Hildebrandt Road, a familiar area landmark where the Dallas school buse., are parked. “DOES THIS LOOK STRAIGHT?” — Dallas Borough Mayor Paul LaBar watches secretary Barbara Zimniski help Joe Hand hang one of six original works of art donated to the borough by Dallas artist Sue Hand in honor of LaBar’s many years of service to the community.
