Porter, A.T.C., has joined the athletic trainers staff of Nesbitt Memorial Hospital's Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation Program (STAR), a new service provided by the hospital's Physical Therapy Department. Porter arrived at Nesbitt Memorial Hospital after serving as assistant athletic trainer at Fork Union Military Academy, Fort Union, Virginia, where he was associated with the training and administrative duties involving both high school and post graduate sports programs. Porter previously was a staff athletic trainer at Lock Haven University, Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, where he assumed responsibilities relevant to the football, men's basketball, rugby, women's lacrosse programs. He also was involved with high school football, soccer and summer wrestling camps. His professional experience also includes an internship with the National Football League's New England Patriots. As an intern athletic trainer, Porter assisted the team’s staff trainers with duties involving training camp, pre- season and various regular season games. Porterreceived a Masters degree of Education in Athletic Training from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville and a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Medicine, with an emphasis on Sports Medicine /Athletic Training, from Lock Haven University. Porter is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, Eastern Athletic Trainers Association and the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainer Society. He also is licensed with Pennsylvania State Athletic Trainers. Porter resides in Harveys Lake. Penn State professor named news Patricia Hinchey, Ed.D., assistant professor of education at the Penn State Worthington Scranton Campus, has been appointed editor of the Eastern Educational Research Association (EERA) Newsletter. The editorship is an executive board position. Now in its 15th year, EERA was established to foster more and better educational research. With approximately 450 members, it is the eastern branch of the national organization American Educational Research Association (AERA). In her capacity as editor, Hinchey will prepare and distribute the association's newsletter, which is the official organ for disseminating policy decisions and other material of interest to the membership. The newsletter is mailed to over 12,000 addresses. letter editor Prior to joining the Worthington Scranton staff, Hinchey was assistant chair of the Department of Languages, Literature, and Social Studies at Columbia University’s Teachers College in New York. While at Columbia, she worked closely with renowned English educator Lucy McCormick Calkins to direct field experiences and master’s programs in English education. A native of Wilkes-Barre, Hinchey graduated cum laude from Wilkes University with a B.A. in English education and an M.S. in English education. She earned her Ed.D. in English education from the Teachers College at Columbia University. Hinchey and her husband, Ed, reside in Dallas, with their daughter, Shawna and son, E.M. Crisano, son of Josephine and stepson of Tom Cleasby of Rice St., Trucksville, recently returned aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Rush, homeported in Honolulu from a two-month deployment to the Northern Pacific. The cutter initially conducted a high seas drift net patrol in the area. It second mission was maritime law enforcement and search and rescue operations in the Gulfof Alaska, Aleutian Islands and Bering Sea. During the deployment, the crew evacuated, provided medical attention to, and transported a Japanese sailor, injured in a fishing accident, from his ship 400 miles north to Adak, Alaska. The Rush also rescued five crewman from the frigid Bering Sea when their vessel capsized. The 1980 graduate of Wyoming Valley West High School, Plymouth, joined the Coast Guard in February 1982.
