"The students at the school are ‘mostly minority students with 80 percent of the students using English as a second language, Griffiths said. Buena Vista is located in the Winwood section of Miami, and according to the school’s principal Patrick Doyle, the area is a Puerto Rican neighborhood. “The school’s population is 63 percent hispanic and 36 percent black. Winwood is a poor neigh- borhood and our students are in need of everything,” according to Doyle. Doyle added that the majority of the students are on the school’s free meal program. Doyle said that Dallas Elemen- tary will provide school supplies for the students. The hurricane delayed the opening of the school for about two weeks. “Teachers were not called to report back immediately because janitors had to clean the school,” Doyle said. Doyle said that the students have not been informed of the assistance because it may be over a week before the items arrive. Smith new postmaster for Shawanese Nancy Smith assumed the position of Postmaster for the Shawanese Post office on June 13, according to Raymond Monroe, General Manager for the Harrisburg Field Division. Smith is a Wilkes-Barre native and began her career with the postal service in 1973 as a part- time clerk at the Harvey's Lake Post Office. Although she has worked at the Harvey's Lake Post office for the past 20 years, Smith said that she has also worked in the Tunkhannock, Dallas and Wilkes-Barre offices. Prior to her appointment, she was Officer-in-Charge at the Harvey's Lake and Shawanese Post Offices. Smith said that she hopes to improve the organization of the Shawanese office, which will make the office more efficient and | workable. She added that getting meters and non-profit permits are | among her goals as postmaster. The Shawanese Post Office | serves the 18654 zip code and 108 | P.O. Boxes.
