6 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, July 1, 1992 COMMUNITY Kimono display begins July 11 at Misericordia The MacDonald Art Gallery at College Misericordia will host an exhibit titled “Japanese Kimonos: Traditional Motifs,” Sunday, July 12 - Wednesday, August 12. A Gala Opening reception will be held Saturday, July 11 in the Gallery from 7 to 9 p.m. The exhibit includes a repre- sentative selection of kimonos and obis, from the lavishly embroidered wedding kimono to the Homongi, a formal kimono worn by single or married women when visiting. Although the kimono presently is unique to Japan, variants of the garment once were prevalent in China and Korea as well. Through succeding eras of wealthy , ex- travagant courts and strict mili- tary rule, the kimono alternated between being gaudy and flam- boyant to being delicately patterned and colored as it generally is to- day. The exhibition is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Thursday, 12-5 p.m., 6- 8 p.m.; Friday, 12-5 p.m.; Satur- day and Sunday, 1-5 p.m. Closed Monday. For more information, contact the MacDonald Art Gallery at 674-6250. Shakespeare discussion at Misericordia A trio of local Shakespearean scholars will present a special symposium related to “Much Ado About Nothing,” this year’s The- atre-On-The-Green Fifth Season production. The symposium will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 14 in Kennedy Lounge, Merrick Hall, College Misericordia. The play, one of Shakespeare's romantic come- dies, transcends time to capture the passionate relationship be- tween men and women and the marriages they engage in, one of themes of the symposium. Dr. Regina Kelly, RSM, profes- sor emeritus, Misericordia Eng- lish dept.; Dr. Scott Blanchard, professor of English at Misericor- dia; and Dr. Millie Lawson, profes- sor of Erglish at King’s College, will conduct this special program. “We will explore the major themes of this Shakespeare comedy in a lively discussion which will involve audience participation,” said Dr. Kelly. The line in Act One, Scene One of the play: “There is a kind of merry war betwixt (them),” refers to the relationship between the main characters of the pj WY. Benedick and Beatrice. The capri- cious nature of these characters sets the tone for the endless match of wits in “Much Ado.” Attending the free symposium will offer participants the opportu- nity to learn more about the play prior to the perfromances of “Much Ado,” which begin at 8 p.m. July 17, 18 and 19.
