One of those games occurred Saturday,Jan. 11, at Lake-Lehman High School when the Knights defeated Meyers 37- 35. With less than a minute re- maining, senior Jeff Hynick sank two free throws to give Lehman the win. «As the low score attests, the )ensive game was the determin- ing factor, and it couldn't have been better for the Knights in the early going. “We were able to shut out Meyers 16-0 in the first quar- ter,” commented Coach Rodger Bearde. “They are bigger than we are and they have scored in the 70's. We had to stop their running game and we did.” The game was not a two-point difference throughout. In fact, Lehman had a 10 point lead going into the second half, but Dave Clancy, who had scored seven points and was invaluable on de- fense, got in foul trouble and had to sit out much of the fourth quar- ter. “Dave's sitting out hurt us, but Scott Schobert filled in and gave us the help we needed,” added Bearde. Lehman was up seven in the final minutes of the game, but a scrappy Meyers kept coming back. “We played hard 32 minutes of aggressive basketball,” a pleased Bearde explained. “It was our best defense in 12 years.” Rich Davis led the Lehman of- fense with 16 points while fresh- man Will Woronko added seven. Clancy and Davis were instrumen- tal in establishing an inside game to complement the defensive ef- fort. Lake-Lehman is now one game behind undefeated Northwest. The teams will play Friday, Jan. 17. THEY'RE REALLY INTO IT - Lake-Lehman co-coaches Tom Williams, left, and Phil Lipski, guided their squad to a 37-18 win over Pittston January 10. The Black Knights are ranked 6th in the state. (Post Photo/Ron Bartizek) Black Knight grapplers turn back challenge from Pittston By FLORENCE FINN Sports Correspondent It was rumored that Pittston could be the team to beat the Lake- Lehman wrestlers, but onJanuary 10, the Knights made winning look easy with a 37-18 victory over the Patriots. In the beginning, it seemed as though Pittston could wrestle with Lehman since they were within six points of the Knights through six bouts. Rick Finnegan had started things for Lehman with a win at 103 and Mike Stuart drew at 112 to be followed by wins at 125 and 130 by John Morgan and Jason McDade. “The key win of the match was at 140. John Wood had been beaten twice by about six points by Pittston’s Aruscavage. When you expect to lose three points and you get six, that's a turning point. John is the hero of the meet,” com- mented Coach Phil Lipski. He re- ferred to Wood's pin in two min- utes and 55 seconds. But Pittston came right back with a pin toquiet the Lake-Lehman fans only to have them stirred up again by four straight wins by Justin Goodwin, Charlie Jacoby by forfeit, Jason Naugle and Mike Geurin by a pin. “We were concerned about Pittston and made some tactical moves. It helped when we won the flip, so that we didn't have to put our man out first,” said Lipski. © Lake-Lehman remains unde- feated in the Wyoming Valley Conference and is ranked sixth in. the state, while Mike Geurin is ranked second and Charlie Jacoby! is first.
