Dallas Twp. . supervisors will press zoning suit By ERIC FOSTER Post Staff The Dallas Township supervi- sors has formally directed their solicitor Frank Townend to appeal the township zoning board's rul- ing that a home for five mentally handicapped men could operate in a area zoned residential. The ac- tion came at the supervisors’ meeting October 1. At issue are two interpretations of township ordinances which appear to be at odds with one another. The zoning board gave the go ahead on the group home at its meeting September 17, based on the ordinance that defines five unrelated persons living in a home as a family. The supervisors and solicitor Townend argue that the home is a boarding house, a business, and should not be permitted in a-resi- dential area. i) Supervisor Phil Walter said that there haven't been any problems from the group home for the four months that the men have been living there, but was worried that the home may set a precedent which would allow other busi- nesses to move into the neighbor- hood. “We've talked with most of the neighbors and except for the two who are so adamant, they don't seem to mind,” said Walter. Walter said that if the Institute of Human Resources, the non- profit company which operates the group home, originally had gone to the supervisors to ask for an ex- ception, something might may have been worked out.
