NICKIE LONG HAS RETURNED FROM GULF Marine Cpl. Nickie T. Long, son of Richard and Catherine Long of E. Center Hill Road, Dallas, re- cently returned from deployment to the Middle East in support of Operation Desert Storm while serv- ing with 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, CA. Operation Desert Storm was the largest deployment of U.S. military forces since Vietnam. The opera- tion was in response to Iraq's inva- sion of Kuwait and threat to Saudi Arabia. The 1987 graduate of Dallas High School joined the Marine Corps in December 1987. Patton named a director of LCCC Foundation Board Robert T. Patton, of Dallas, has been named to the Luzerne County Community College Foundation Board of Directors by the LCCC Board of Trustees. Patton, senior vice president of Merchants Bank, North, is a member of the College's Board of Trustees. He also is a member of the Boards of College Misericor- dia, Clear Brook Lodge and Manor, and WVIA-TV, where he serves as treasurer. They are the parents of seven children. Dr. Congdon promoted at Univ. of Georgia Dr. Justin D. Congdon, a physio- logical ecologist has been an asso- ciate research ecologist at the Savannah River Ecology Labora- tory for five years, recently was promoted to senior research ecolo- gist by the University of Georgia. SREL is a research unit of UGA under contract with the U.S. De- partment of Energy to conduct ecological research at the Savan- nah River Site, a nuclear materials production facility near the Geor- gia-South Carolina border and Aiken, S.C. / As a senior ecologist at SREL, Dr. Congdon will continue his research on the ecology fish and reptiles, such as snakes, turtles, lizards and alligators. “Specific areas of my research include questions such as, ‘why do turtles not show the signs of aging characteristic of many other ani- mals?’ Our studies have docu- mented that many individual turtles live more than 60 years,” Dr. Congdon said. He has published 46 scientific papers, books or chapters on his research. In addition to his position at SREL, Dr. Congdon holds adjunct positions at the Museum of Zool- ogy, The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich.; the Department of Acquaculture, Fisheries and Wildlife, Clemson University, Clemson, S.C.; and the zoology departments at the University of Georgia, Athens, Ga., and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tenn. Before becoming an associate research ecologist at SREL in 1985, Dr. Congdon was a post-doctoral scholar at SREL and at the Mu- seum of Zoology at the University of Michigan.
