16 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, March 20, 1991 SPORTS Local players shine on Misericordia team By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer Former Dallas and Lake- Lehman high school softball play- ‘ers are making a big impact at College Misericordia. “We have seven local girls on our softball team this season,” said the Lady Cougars Coach Charlotte Slocum while discussing her Cou- | gars softball team. “We also have seven starters returning and we have more depth on the team this year than we ever had in the past. Last year we had a 20-10 record but this year our goal is to improve our record and win the district.” Last season the Lady Cougars finished third in the NAIA Tourna- ment. “We play some tough schools and it won't be easy but our girls have a strong desire to win and these girls will work hard to make their goal. , “This year we have our own softball field so it should be an advantage. We won't have to worry about the pitchers’ mound being in the way and we won't have to worry about practice time.” Back Mountain girls on this year's team include Susie Slocum, | Lake-Lehman, co-captain, who will be the starting second baseman } and was a second-team All-Dis- trict player last year. Slocum led the team last season with a .410 average and was fast on the bases stealingl3 bases and scoring 25 runs. Tracy Hunter of Dallas will Clarifications be the starting left fielder. She was named ‘rookie of the year’ last season when she hit .360 and led the team with 28 runs and batted in 30 more. Laura Poynton, another gradu- ate of Dallas and an outstanding pitcher, will start at shortstop and also serve as a relief pitcher; and Kim Sevenski, a sophomore who caught for Lake-Lehman, isbackup catcher for the Lady Cougars. Kim Jenkins of Northwest will play in the outfield and also see some time as a designated hitter. Cindy Hughes, a junior and All- District choice is alefthander from Nanticoke and will return to the mound for her third season. Hughes was 9-7 last season with a .47 earned run average and also helped herself at the plate wtih a .364 average and 16 RBI's. “Becky Welgosh is from Hanover and will play the centerfield posi- tion. We also have some freshmen and some of our returning players who are going to play some key roles in our aim to achieve our goal. “We have the best collection of talent we ever had, more depth and morerelief. We play some tough teams and it won't be easy but we have set a goal and we will try to achieve it.” The Lady Cougars will play 36 games this season opening with Philadelphia Pharmacy, away, on Saturday. of new state regulations for fisherman Some confusion still exists over new regulations passed by the State Fish Commission for the 1991 season. The trout/salmon stamp is required if you wish to fish for trout this year. The stamp is not required if you purchased a senior lifetime license before January 1, 1991. If you purchased a senior life- time license afterJanuary 1, 1991, ‘you will be ‘required to purchase only one trout stamp, goed for the life of the license holder. Astamp is not required if you are under the | age of 16 or if you are fishing for bass, stripers, shad or other spe- | cies of fish other than trout or salmon. Registration is required of all boats, powered or non-powered, using Fish Commission access areas and property this year. A boat registration is needed to use facilities along rivers, streams or lakes that are provided by the Pennsylvania Fish Commission. State Parks will also honor Fish Commission boat registrations. Bass season will close on all lakes, ponds, rivers and streams at midnight, April 12. The season will reopen on June 15. In addition to the closure on rivers and streams, the minimum size limit during the open season has been raised from 10 inches to 12 inches. The exception is the daily limit during the open season from the . Dock Stream Dam on the Susquehanna River near Harris- burg downstream to Holtwood Dam will be 4 bass per day, 15 inches or more in length. These changes are not found in the 1991 summary books issued with boat registrations or fishing licenses. Deadline is Monday at 4:00 PM York Catholic puts end to Dallas season Mountaineers finish at 22-6 By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer The Dallas Mountaineers were confident going into their quarter- final district playoff game with undefeated York Catholic, the No. 1 team in the state. Their confi- dence wasn't enough as they were outscored by the Irish cagers 26-8 in the first quarter. Dallas stopped the runaway, but the Irish, who are now 57-0 over the past two season, went on to win 78-50. Damon Lisnow was able to put the Mountaineers on the board first when he hit a two-point shot but the Irish came right back and scored a fast 14 points paced by the team’s leading scorer Brian Pearl. Lisnow played an excellent game leading the Dallas team in outscoring York 15-14 in the sec- ond period. Lisnow scored 13 of 15 points in the second period and finished the game with 25 points although sitting out much of the final period. York Catholic gave Ray Russin little chance to score as they kept a man to man defense on him the entire game to hold Russin to only nine points. Dave Puz managed to putin 10 points for the Mountain- ers. The Dallas team finished the season with a record of 22-6, the best record they have had since Dallas won districts in 1984.
