A The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, February 6, 1991 9 309 (continued from page 1) pay for and maintain the light,” Lemmond explained. Mundy said she was also inter- ested in Route 309 and the traffic congestion due to increased use of the highway. “It is a problem highway due to the many turnoffs and in the past two years I believe the state tried to improve the highway to reduce congestion but the growth of the area has been tremendous,” said Rep. Mundy. She said it might take more enforcement by the police, more publicity, or reduced speed limits. Rep. Mundy met with PennDOT officials January 25 to discuss the problems to determine if they had any answers. She also said she would be inter- ested in attending a meeting such as that suggested by Senator Lemmond and would call him to indicate her interest. Local police chiefs say they would be happy to discuss the problems and will probably take it to the municipalities’ officials for discussion. They recognize that the problems now in existence will increase as the Cross Valley Ex- pressway is completed. Dallas Borough Police Chief John Fowler said he would be happy to sit down in a meeting with state officials to discuss some of the ways in which he believes the highway's problems could be resolved. Kingston Township Police Chief Paul Sabol agreed that a meeting with the PennDOT officials might produce some solutions to the increased traffic flow and accidents on the highway. “The traffic isn't going to get any better. When the Cross Valley is completed it will be worse.” Dallas Township Chief Carl Miers said he had several ideas he would like to discuss with officials that might be successful in solving the traffic problems. “I'm also concerned with the increased truck traffic now using Route 309 com- ing down from Tunkhannock and above. It's heavier now than in the past and when the Cross Valley is completed, it will make it a shorter route for the truckers to come down Route 309 to pick up I-81, the turnpike, I-80 and even Routes 11 and 115, Miers said. The next step seems to be for the municipalities to contact Senator Lemmond to set up a meeting with PennDOT officials. Beach (continued from page 1) recently met with members of the executive board of the HLBA. “We had met with the hopes of amica- bly resolving our ditterences over the resolution,” said Burke. “There seems to be room for compromise in dealing with cer- tain aspects of our position and hopefully those of the beach asso- ciation,” he added. Burke said that he was awaiting word from the Beach Association about the proposed compromises, however that word may not be what he would like to hear. Attorney Charles McCormick, who represents the HLBA, said last week that the request of the members opposing the sale has been refused. McCormick said that the asso- ciation was not satisfied with some of the proposed compromises and is continuing to complete the sale. He added that there is a signed agreement of sale between the association and Paglianite, but the sale may not be completed until the issue is settled in court. “We would like to get things moving along,” said McCormick. “Things have been slowed down with the suit and we may be filing a motion in court to either get a hearing on the issue or find some kind of settlement.” Even though no agreement has been found, Burke is confident the 14 members will be satisfied with a court decision. “The ball is in our court,” he said. “If we have no agreement I firmly believe a court will find that we are correct in| | opposing the sale.” Burke stressed that the opposi- | | tion to the sale is not solely over | money. “If I thought that were the | | case, I would have never met with | | these members,” he said. Thedissident members want the sale stopped so that the associa- | | tion can work towards reopening | | the beach. “The suit is not about | | money, itis about the beach,” said | | Burke. Paglianite also has stated he wants to upgrade the beach and | | openit to the public for swimming. | | After the July meeting, he said | that he was planning a $100,000 renovation project to bring the area up to DER approval for a public swimming beach.
